*** Official Kodi (née XBMC) Thread ***

KODI is just a client. You just point KODI to the network path of your files. By default it keeps it's own database of stuff. You can run a Mysql DB for KODI though so that more than one client can get the same watched status/DB information.

Plex is a two part operation. Plex Media Server, runs on server, acts as "Backend". Plex client is the second part, which acts as the player/streamer.

I have used both, but in my opinion Plex is better, it seems to update the watched/resume statuses better than KODI, and I really like the On Deck stuff for quickly playing the latest episode in a show you are watching.

Cool, thank you for the clarification.

Is anyone having any issues with Kodi addons after upgrading to Windows 10? Some on mine are getting errors now that were fine prior to upgrading.

Recently set this up on an Android tv box and I cant believe how brilliant this software is. So many channels, add-ons etc. Just have to read the whole thread now.

I had a few problems with my install after the win 10 update - I assume it was some plugins not working - did a clean reinstall of kodi and it is much better now - worth a try if still having problems

Set up for live TV today (RPi2/openelec) but the TV selection on the home screen bar disappears every time Kodi is turned off/on. I have to go into system/live TV and disable/enable for it to reappear on home screen.
Anyone had this prob and fixed it?

*Fixed it. Had to flush the pvr database.

Can I use Kodi on my FTV box to watch my mkv's in 5.1 surround? I believe FTV and Plex don't support 5.1 out put...

FTV box will be hardwired to router, Plex server running on main machine, FTV hooked up to my Sony DN1050 amp via HDMI.

Set up tvmc on fire tv today and not sure how i feel about using such a thing

Do i need to be using a vpn with something like this? I imagine not? New to this stuff

Umm depends I guess on what your watching. Personally I dont stream any movies on Kodi (Have them stored locally) as Germany is pretty funny about copyright stuff but for 2 years now I use it for streaming TV series and Live UK Free TV without any VPN.

Even in UK if its movie content I would use a VPN but thats just me.

What do vpns actually do? Im new to this stuff and couldnt find a clear answer on google as to wether i need one or not, assumed it was just for peer to peer related stuff

I have kodi on my PC and my Raspberry Pi.
I use the default Confluance Skin on both as I prefer it, however I use the Wallstream mod (http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=82065) to have a nice wall for my movie list. This requires you to replace files inside the Confluence Skin folder where Kodi is installed.

I want to do this on my Rasberry Pi as-well, but I just cant figure out how to do it.
I have openelec linux installed on the Pi, I can put the Sd-card into an adapter and browse the files on my PC but I cant find the confluance folder anywhere (different file structure)

Really want to add this, not interested in using another skin that provices a wallstream as they are significantly slower than the default on the Pi and lag too much (if you know of a light-weight skin with a wallstream please share)

Openelec really testing my patience, have a Raspberry PI 2 so no real other upgrade path. running Openelec 5.0.8. Missed Kodi v15 and now v15.1 is out and still nothing.

I've been using PIA VPN for just over 6 months. Originally subscribed to get Netflix US. I've since just signed up for 12 months as it works out at $3.33 per month, Which is naff all.

VPN's should be a go between, Between you and your ISP.

Imagine a long road, your house at one end and your ISP at the other. Half way down the road is a turn off. No your ISP is looking at you flying down the road at speed (Or pulling a wheelie etc) and is waiting until he can see you properly and read your number plate.. Now the turn off half way down is your VPN. It allows you to turn off the road and continue pulling a wheelie Etc but your ISP can no longer see you.

I'm sure I could have put that better but I'm tired

Haha that's a mental analogy! :p

Your ISP basically only sees that you're connected to the VPN and nothing after. At the other side, VPN provides have locations all over the world so if say you wanted to watch BBC iPlayer from Germany you'd connect to a UK VPN location and then when you went on iPlayer it would think that you're coming from the UK. Like wise Netflix US on a US VPN etc.

They slow your connection down a bit though so if you just wanted to browse or download something that you don't want your ISP to know about (you might be embarrassed about ordering German Techno and not want your ISP to know) or maybe they suddenly chose to block Google or something then you're best connecting to a VPN as close to you as possible. Connect and run some speed tests is the best way of finding the good ones.

I use Express VPN.
