*** Official Kodi (née XBMC) Thread ***

Starting to wonder whether XBMC is as good as i thought. Watching TV on another input via the Virgin box has higher definition than anything i'm playing from libraries though XBMC, even bluray ISO files.

I'm not seeing the crispness i do from just watching TV.

You're settings aren't right. Virgin HD will be 1080i at best with a much lower bitrate and MPEG2 encoded so vastly inferior to a Blu-Ray rip.

Could be, if i am point me in the right direction. Using a 50" LG plasma, i think the model 50pa650t if that helps.

I've got 'sync playback to display' ticked and that's about it for refresh that i can see.

Those ^ ?

I notice there's and XBMC thread and no mediaportal one.

Is XBMC better?

If you want TV, there's no compromise, MP wins hands down, I've never got the love for XBMC but then i've always had TV as a requirement :)

Does XBMC do transcoding?
one really good add-on for MP is webmediaportal which alows it to act in much the same way as plex only it supports TV

I'd also check your graphic card control panel, and disable any video optimization that might be set there.

NZB -

Do NOT use the option "Use a fullscreen window rather than true fullscreen" - you want a fullscreen and not a pseudo Window.

Also you could use the option to "Adjust display refresh rate to match video" and put a delay in of about 0.5sec - to allow time for your TV to switch.

Allow Hardware DXVA2

When playing back a film press "o" on the keyboard to ensure that you are using DXVA as the rendering method.

Are you sure Vimes?

I need to have the fullscreen window option on otherwise XBMC minimizes if i do anything on the monitor. DXVA seems a bit pointless, it offloads work to the GPU and makes scaling a bit carp if i'm only watching 720p content.

Yes I am sure :)

The wording is misleading as you do want a fullscreen and the way to achieve that is to make sure that you have just that by unticking that option. By ticking it all you get is a borderless Window.
EDIT: For me I never got any issue with the XBMC Window minimising when doing the above and using a monitor for the second output, but I no longer do that now. What I did get by enabling it though was a stuttering effect during playback on the TV. Try it and see how it works for you.

But am I to understand that you have the TV connected via HDMI and then a monitor also connected to the same box, outputted via DVI, for example...?

BTW - What gpu, model etc, are you using and the driver version, also the method of connection...? If it is NVidia make sure that in the drivers it is using the video players default settings to control the video output. The same would apply for a AMD card.

Yep TV - HDMI and Monitor - DVI and the box has a 7950 in it atm.

Tried the settings you mentioned and while it does seem a bit better on 1080p content it now doesn't fill the screen for anything 720p or SD. although it weirdly does when on the menu screen, hit back to go back to the video and big black borders appear again. [Edit - fixed that, was 'AMD Steady Video' in CCC causing it]

When you are playing a 720p or SD video press the letter "M" on the keyboard and then click on the icon which resembles a canister of film, for video adjustments. The speaker type icon is for sound.
You can select that to apply for all videos.

Check that the AMD drivers are not doing anything with the scaling of playing videos, I am more familiar with NVidia cards for a HTPC

Nah i don't need to mess with the video adjustments, it was just that setting in CCC causing it since changing the adjust display refresh to match the video. As soon as i turned it off things went back to fullscreen goodness.

Glad that you got it sorted, just wade your way through the AMD options to ensure that they are not putting any processing effects etc to the video over that of what XBMC does.

I'd never noticed this. I tried it and tried a 720p vidoe: I have black bars around it. It's being scaled up larger than 720, but not to the full 1080 available.

The previous poster said AMD Steady Video was the culprit in his case. In mine it's greyed out and not selected or selectable. Any idea what's causing these black bars?
