*** Official Kodi (née XBMC) Thread ***

Wanted to have a look at XBMC as I was thinking of getting a new home cinema type system but I am having a problem with it. I can only get playback to work if I set it to use my speakers in WASAPI mode with exclusive use turned on. Is this the only option or is there a reason why it won't work in direct sound mode (this causes massive lag on video playback, and music sits at 0s and won't move).

Sampsy, your audio settings are wrong.

Typically that you've said that you've got a device connected which is capable of decoding various audio formats - when it can't.

Switch off all of the audio formats that might be switched on.

I read some posts blaming the sound for the issues and obviously that is the case, but I don't understand what you mean "switch off audio formats". Where do I do this?

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Windows_Settings_for_AudioEngine

Looking at this page they look at the properties of HDMI output which I am not using. My pheobus properties does not have a supported formats page. Furthermore I have to say this is NOT a problem with my audio settings, this is a problem with XBMC. I don't have sound issues with anything other than XBMC, it just seems that XBMC's sound implementation is poor.

Within XBMC, go to Settings -> System -> Audio output

There are a number of options - I can almost guarantee that one of the formats that are enabled will be causing the issue.

Take a screenshot, and I'll tell you what to try next.

I had to take a pic with my phone as whenever I hit print screen the page flipped to the Video Output screen and the screenshot ended up blank.

I can't change any of the receiver options, or the Passthrough option. Audio & Video playback only works when I set the output device to WASAPI and allow exclusive control in the windows sound panel.

Can you try changing the output to DirectSound: Speakers ?

That's what it is set to now, via the sound card. If you mean plain old DirectSound: Speakers which I presume would be via onboard sound then no I can't. Onboard sound isn't enabled and it isn't presented as an option.

Third time lucky. Can someone recommend a streaming app or method for content on my HTPC to iOS devices please? A doddle on Android with Yatse (remote and streaming over wifi) and Emit (streaming from any location). All I can find are remotes only or half baked solutions.

My bad, I completely mis-read your photo!

Setting it to Analog, 2.0 with speakers is the usual trouble-shooting steps to do. Have you tried disabling the "Boost volume level on downmix" and "Output stereo to all speakers" options?

To confirm your setup, you have 2 speakers, plugged into the analogue output of your sound card (typically the green connector)?

Finally sorted out my playback issues from my server. Was quite simple in the end.
I recreated a homegroup starting from the server and then added each device and seems to have solved the need to seek for dirs on each boot up.

Personally, I don't like homegroups, I just create 2x users on my main file server.

One is 'media' which only has read-only access

The other user is 'bledd' which has read/write access (administrator has full access)

I don't like homegroups either. Mine is pretty simple though, the HTPC has 4TB onboard so no need for a server, it's only me that uses it. So a server would be overkill :p

I have an iOmega 2TB NAS drive, but had so many problems with it lately. It came to the point where it just was seeing barely all the files via my smart TV and on my PC is was very slow to connect too and often disappeared off the network.

I did a format+ factory reset, now it has trouble playing any files - just continuous loading.

Think it's time to save up for a better one.

Before I trash my library accidentally, can I just check if anyone has used Plex and XBMC pointing at the same files?

I have a server with all my media on it. I then have a HTPC running XBMC and pointed at the shares on the server as location for media. All the XBMC DBs are on the HTPC. I assume there is a metadata file places in the directory of the media on the server though?

My plan is to drop Plex Media Server onto the server to then allow me to whop some Plex devices about the house (a NowTV, to start). I assume Plex will also drop some metadata information into the shares where my media is stored? Is this going to conflict with the XBMC metadata?

I don't want to combine the 2 really. I just want them both separate, but pointing at the same raw media files without tripping over each other.

I've been through most at some point and settled on XBMC and love it.

Plex will just be as a secondary unit for a TV in the bedroom or kitchen for the GF to watch something while I hog the lounge TV/Sky :). And with NowTV being a tenner its a bit of a no brainier really.
