***Official Le Mans 24 Hours Thread***

Does anyone know of a website that explains the the Hybrid rules for Le Mans? I'm struggling to understand them. Theres something to do with activation zones and braking zones?
I'm struggling to find 2 sites which say the same thing let alone explain it well.

Did find one which is reasonable - http://www.speedsportlife.com/2012/05/30/2012-24-hours-of-le-mans-acofia-announce-hybrid-braking-zones/

My understanding is:
  • 500KJ released between each designated braking zone
  • No "push to pass", the energy is released simply as the car runs
  • Audi can't release energy below 120kmh because it goes to the fornt wheels - I assume this is the ACO trying to prevent then having an advantage out of the corners

Not sure how the last one fits with the requirement to be able to run the length of the pit lane at 60kmh on KERS only to be designated a hybrid.

Ah ok, that makes more sense. In each braking zone they can harvest 500KJ of energy and release that until the next zone as additional power delivered through normal drive.

Yeah, I don't get the Audi system regards the pit rules either. Unless they are running on engine power? They use a flywheel KERS too which we all thought was against the ACO rules, so its entirely possible they have convinced the ACO to allow them to bend the rules for them.

I shall see if you can hear it under power down the pits during qualifying, which has just started by the way :D

Just spotted that the Garage 56 spot for next year is already filled....

Er..... ok.

Ok, one of the E-Tron Audis just trundled down the pitlane under diesel engine power, so I assume they aren't using electric power in the pitlane like the Toyotas.

Not that ive found.

This is the actual link http://live.lemans-tv.com/

I've just read that Michelin has set the Delta Wing a target of 10 stints on 1 set of tyres. Anyone know how many laps the Delta Wing is doing per stint?

Edit: Holy cow. Just combined a number of articles for some Google based maths. Delta Wing expect to be doing 2 laps more than most on a single stint. The Audis are doing 10 or 11 lap stints, meaning the Delta Wing should be looking at 12 or 13 laps. That means Michelin have set a target of up to 130 laps on a single set of tyres! The entire race on 3, maybe 4 sets!

Wow!

Hydrogen tanks on the side of the car?
Huh.... Well that sounds.... errr... safe?

But the DeltaWing is growing on me. Still don't think it's particularly attractive, but it's better that the LMP cars. I think it'd look better in different colours.

Shame that the number 8 Toyota has lost an engine. :(

Due to the fact the Audi's goes to the front wheels, not the rear, they are only allowed to engage it at speeds above 125kph iirc.

Aparently those hydrogen tanks are 10x as strong as LMP1 fuel tanks, and hydrogen (I assume in liquid form?) is less flammable than petrol.

As for the 10 stint thing for the Delta Wing, they aren't in a race so its not about speed of pit stops. They are all about proof of concept so if they can do 10 stints they will just to prove they can.
They are all about efficiently. Half the power, half the weight, half the fuel, and half the tyres of the 'normal' P2 cars, while lapping at the same speed.

Yeah, but that seemed to contradict with the rule about being able to do the length of the pitlane (400m) under electric power only at 60km/h.

However, having looked into it, it looks like that is something they just have to prove they are able to do, and not actually something they have to do during the race.

First qualifying results.

Looking at those times, you have to wonder why anyone other than Audi or Toyota bothers to turn up with a P1 car :(

Hmm, the Eurosport comentators don't seem too keen on the Delta Wing. They are constantly talking about it being in the way, expecting it to not do very well, not finish, and have started saying they "don't see its relevance".

Strikes me as either being a bit dismissive of it because its different, or maybe they simply don't understand what its all about.

I think its great. I hope they finish and I hope someone makes a 1:18 diecast model of it

Damn. :(

Was hoping for a Toyota on the front row.

Oh well. They were a lot closer than I was initially expecting, especially as they have come into Le Mans a year earlier than they initially wanted to.

LMP2 is amazingly close though.

Nice to see the DeltaWing in 29th, ahead of some of the LMP2's. All I can hope is that they finish the 24 hours.
