I dread to think what the total download will be by the time I buy it or does a lot get overwritten

Little from column A, little from column B. Install size has grown a bit since launch but that's largely due to optional updates of Japan, USA and UK which you don't need to download if you don't want to.

Most of the core sim updates just appear to be changing data rather than adding significant new volumes of it.

Am going to be formatting my windows drive sometime soon, do i need to download this whole game again or can i backup the files for it ?

Can i just backup the main game folder to another hard drive and then move it back after i installed windows ?
(The main game folder is 99.7GB)

My install says this
(But if that 49GB patch & 5GB UK/World update needs to be downloaded after downloading the game files then the download will be even more then this)

Anyone else keep getting accessibility options, control setups, gfx settings and data settings crop up every boot of the sim requiring you to click through them?

Keeps resetting everything to defaults which is mildly irritating to put it lightly.

Ah, not just me UI broken and reset user settings - Bugs & Issues / Performance, Graphics & CTDs - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

Think I may give MSFS a break for a while till they sort this sort of stuff out lol. Fingers crossed for the sim update

@Zeeflyboy

You might know this. If I want to install a new version of the FBW A320, do I have to remove the old version or will the installer just install the new one over the top of it?

Slso, I wish they’d do a handcrafted Gatwick. Enjoy doing holiday runs out of there to the Balearics, Greece etc. Closest I can get to a holiday atm lol

you may find this thread of use Move MSFS2020 to New Drive - Self-Service / PC & Hardware - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

I don't know what install options you chose, but for me I have the main game on a separate drive ("F:/MS flight Sim" containing "community" and "Official" folder) which is the bulk of the install (100gb+). I have previously uninstalled and re-installed just the launcher, then pointed the new install at the existing folder which seemed to work fine in the past so I suspect as long as you copy that folder to a new drive and then copy it back all you *should* need to do is redownload the launcher and point it in the right place.

Bit of a long shot but does or has anyone monitored their cpu temp when msfs 2020 runs? Asking because while playing ie actually flying my cpu temp is typically 60s or low 70s c but when loading a flight it peaks briefly at low 90s!

75 max for me but mostly hovers between 60 and 70. 5800x.

Thx @bmad , so I'm running a bit hot, only happens in the loading screen of the game, doesn't happen in other games... puzzling. I plan to upgrade my cpu in maybe 12 months so I'll just live with it for now and hope it lasts.

It rinses the CPU while loading, so you are just seeing the temps that your CPU hits while closer to maxxed out.

What CPU and cooler? If you haven't changed the thermal paste for a while maybe it's dried out.

I7 7700k with (I think) stock cooler, it could be the thermal paste as its 4 years old. Earlier I reversed the slight oc it had and set the cpu voltage control mode to default so it drops voltage when not under load, tested the sim and it hit 89c briefly when loading about my 5th flight. Flying it hits 75c. Roll on when I upgrade my cpu which could be sooner than I planned.

7700k runs pretty hot, especially on a poor cooler (don’t think the k’s shipped with stock cooling? If you are using a boggo Intel cooler that comes with the non k sku’s it’s really barely sufficient). Re-pasting may help a little but I wouldn’t have thought by much more than a couple of degrees.

I wouldn’t worry too much about occasional spikes to 89, obviously cooler temps would be preferable but that isn’t an uncommon temp with that CPU and 100 is the limit.

WOW almost 49GB that a big update

Makes me glad I avoided this due to the exclusion of helos. I'm stuck with 1MB/s internet, so games that have patches of this size are a right pain in the ******* arse. By the time you've finished downloading that patch the next one has been released, so rather than actually playing the game you're just stuck continually downloading patches.
