*** Official OcUK Minecraft Server - Discussion and Rules ***

So at one building per player that's just over 50 hours....
I did say

But tbh best option would be not let anyone transfer builds reason for this it gives everyone an even start and encourages working together more.

Another alternative would be to just keep the spawn area as that looks nice and gives people a good start.

Below is the type of map you should expect to be generated when 1.8 hits.

Request to be added to whitelist to join the MC server please.

LinkTart username: thaldarin
minecraft username: thaldarin

I don't really do forums, have bought quite a few times off of OC for my own computery bits.

Janosuk can vouch for me I believe.

If you could read the OP and register on linktart.co.uk, I'll get you added to the whitelist :D

i dont mind if we carry over builds or just start fresh, im one of those players who has lots of half started projects rather than ones ive worked on for months so i dont really have a lot of time invested in minecraft to lose.

As long as the new map and update offers a lot more than what we have now id welcome the change.

Not sure what else I need to do. I'm on lintart.co.uk as thaldarin, I've added the minecraft group, I've put my'name' and 'ocuk forum name' as thaldarin on there too. Minecraft username registered as thaldarin too.

Sometimes I'm a bit thick but I can't see what else I need to do, if you're able to lend a hand?

This is spot on tbh.
Also transferring builds to dif maps is very easy with world edit and the best way to do this would be limit 1 build per person. Then let everyone log onto new map find the location they would like for the old build set home so admins can get to the location even if player is logged out. But tbh best option would be not let anyone transfer builds reason for this it gives everyone an even start and encourages working together more.

Admin saves the schematic from there old build and basically pastes it on the player chosen spot. Things like landscaping ect is the players responsibility. I know world edit can be a pain when comes to saving chest contents my attitude is tough luck new map = new resources. Transfering one build should take average 5-15 mins from what I have seen on my server. But I am very experienced with world edit so may differ depending on the person using it.

This is exactly the method we employed last time.

It takes far longer than 5-15 minutes per person once you factor in all the negotiating with the player as to where things should go and deal with the errors in copying.

IF there's a world reset I think the easiest (for the admins) and fairest (for long time users) is to move 1 building, the Pantheon. It's full of chests (more can also be added) and have everyone store all the mats they want in there.

Upside:
- Takes 1 admin 10mins max to move the Pantheon.
- Users keep their materials they spent months obtaining.
- Server gets a brand new world with all the 1.8 goodies (and 1.4+ stuff)

Downside:
- People with huge (unfinished (probably never to be finished :p)) builds get shafted.

My 2p.

Lawl, I can imagine that: "Server restart in 5 mins" everyone: "oh god restarting -.-"
*AFTER RESTART*
frenchtart: "all ur mapz are belong to us"
users: "oh noes"

Ok guess i have had time to think on this.

I would be ok with loosing my mega build for a new map IF there is that much of a change to the map and it is needed. All the i would ask for is to have a large area flattened for me to start again. I would also like to then have the build re converted to sandstone when i get to that point.

I know i am greedy in this but i just recently got a huge amount of work done on that build and getting back into completing it.

Ether way if a clean map is need then so be it. I will cry for a bit but will just start again :P

No offence to anyone, as there's a lot of people who do this, but I've never understood why people do such mega builds on a beta SMP server, I'm talking builds that take months and months (and still aren't finished, then give up and quit the game!)

I guess the reason is because it's fun :p

SOLUTION TO THE MAP THING (possibly)

What about one of the multiworld plugins. Simply have a smaller world akin to unstable land, but for people to explore in? This world can then be reset everytime something new comes out. You could also have a world purely for resources which can get demolished.

Dont know how much space/ram/bandwith it would use but it sure could save A LOT of headaches.

Honestly, if the map got wiped, I'm not sure I could continue playing. I would rather volunteer to give up a week of my time to transfer everyone's builds than to lose everything I've worked on over the past 8 months.

I also think starting a new map now would be a big mistake, as it'd probably need wiping again in 3 months time when the full release comes out.

For now, I think the best thing would be to reset the unstable land when 1.8 hits, let everyone get stuck in exploring and whatnot, reset it again for 1.9 if there are any major changes, then make a decision on a map change.

My two cents :D

I'm currently on holiday in Portmeirion, so don't expect any activity from me on the server.

I know that changing map is an unpopular option considering the problems from last time. But considering the fact that Jeb was talking about 1.7 seeds... we are using a 1.3 one I believe. This could lead to some world corruption and I doubt anyone wants world holes on the map.
a lot of people have put in enormous amounts of effort into their builds. I acknowledge this but to a degree I have aswell. I'm sure that I wouldn't want to lose that work completely due to corruption. And the idea that the unstable land would be able to give us all our 1.8 needs is quite frankly, ridiculous. Not only are giant mushrooms and the like going to be rare, but this is a server with usually 5/6 people on, and at peaks, 20 or more. Along with the fact that amazing landscapes we discover will vanish within a few weeks and be replaced by potentially lesser landscapes is always disappointing.

I believe the first idea of the unstable landscape was so that we had a constant stream of resources to collect, not as a substitute for the biggest update in minecraft history.
Saying that we will not have an up to date map just because of people not wishing to have the bother of registering their builds for a transfer if one is available, who will most likely later be complaining over the outdated map and jagged edges and corruption.

I do not for one moment believe that it is sensible to delay, because it will be a delay in the end, a map change that will eventually be wanted by the very people who have delayed it.
I hate making assumptions but for once I feel that this time my assumptions are based in fact because before you took over french, people were happy with the server and as far as I know, did not want a new map. Later, they did, and you gave them a new map and they were happy. I believe the same is happening now.

Minecraft is a constantly evolving game and I believe that the threat of a map change has been approaching for a while game due to the evolution and changes of Minecraft, and I hope that people understand while it may not be the most beneficial change straight away, it will be later. I also hope that the admins do decide to change the map, however I have no influence over their decision and it is up to them, I am just trying to state my argument as to why the map should change.

NOTE: This was written on a netbook so it'll be not the best thing I've written. ^.^

not that i play any more, boo, but it's my opinion that I've been through enough major updates to minecraft to know that big changes to the gameplay or the way the maps are generated pretty much require a freshly generated new world. It isnt ever a popular option, yet people always want to build on new grounds. That isn't possible if the only new grounds are unstable and regenerated every so often.

when 1.7 was released ( i think it was 1.7) which added new trees and changed to amount of iron and coal that was generated ect ect, linktart was on the previous world map. Everybody moved to the new areas and pretty much deserted the original spawn, largely because none of the new materials were there.

Robosprog, tummy, tostring - they are all correct. It'll be needed eventually. If only it was made easier to move builds to new worlds, then it wouldn't be such a difficult topic to discuss.

Both pretty much spot on.

I understand fully the hours and effort people have put in to this game and their respective builds.

I think we could get away with delaying the map restart a while until maybe the official release but we will have to eventually. I'm a little bit annoyed but it's why I've held of making anything now. I'm just happy to keep a chest with diamond's, Iron, Coal and Brick in and move the chest across.

Hell, I even think starting from zero would be fun, would (in theory) bring everyone together at the start to build a safe zone.
