Ive just joined but made a complete hash of it!!! didnt check the date and just started build old technology!!!! lol
 
Could you fix the acceleration on the server please? If you wouldn't mid, I'd like to have a go at fiddling with the server settings, 3 million for a train is ridiculous. :p
 
Anyone else want some NewGRFs installed on to the server? I will compile a list of good, working ones if there's any interest.

WRT newGRFs, I'll have a look into getting them setup on a server. The problem is that there's some people fairly new to the game, and I didn't want to overcomplicate it for them.

Shouldn't be that hard, missing GRFs can usually be auto downloaded by OTTD nowadays. Any comment on the acceleration/insane inflation?
 
Couple of things which would be nice to change, all matter of opinion though -

- Turn off / reduce breakdowns
- Turn off the UFO attacks
- Slightly larger map
- More industries
- Realistic acceleration option turned on (so powerful trains don't slow down on one tile hills for example)

Lastly, don't know if its possible but would be good if the game time was running slower. We're already in year 2113 and started in 1950? It would be good if it took say a week to get to this year instead?
 
Right, I'm heading off to sleep, but it looks like at some point we'll wipe the server and start again with a larger map, more industries, low breakdowns (This is normal, apparently) and disasters off, as I've noticed the UFOs destroying rail tracks. And if you're not on, that's a huge issue and destoys your profitability.

I do really like the idea of changing the day length. Its not officially in the game as of yet, but here is a thread on the forums talking about it, and this post contains a fairly up to date patch which adds the option. However, as these are patch files, they are designed for only one specific revision of the nightly code, and have to be manually compiled. However, in this post someone appears to have compiled the r24093 build of openttd with the day/night patch. I'll give this a run tomorrow after work to see how it runs. I know that the 24093 build is from around 2 weeks ago, so should be pretty similar to the 1.2.0 release though I don't know the exact differences.
 
Iviv make sure inflation is off next time, it's impossible for the new guys to make it when a train costs millions of pounds!
 
I'm happy to help configure things with new GRFs/builds/etc but just so you're aware I will need to compile new builds from source (iirc) due to the joys of using a headless server. It's not a big issue but if I could just ask for you to settle on a particular build (e.g. one that is known to not have game breaking bugs :p ) before I go around compiling stuff then that would be really helpful :)

Also how about no planes? As they are far too easy. Could be a bit draconian though :)

Turn breakdowns off, and allowing 90* turns - it's unrealistic. You might want to switch the town road layout to 'better roads', it fixes it. Also turn on manual primary industry construction and allow multiple similar industries per town.

There, all the problems of the server fixed.

Also, you might want to limit ships, and FFS, don't use Path Based Signalling everywhere! Both slow down the server massively if you have too many of them.

Thanks for all the input! Tomorrow I'll try and speak with FrenchTart and get it all sorted out. Set the breakdowns to reduced, disasters, inflation and 90 turns are off, and the road layout is changed. Which is the better primary industry method? I'm liking the prospecting idea, but not tried it so can't really comment.

As mentioned above we'll try and get it working with the slower days mod to hopefully prevent people getting too far behind, though that will require some experimenting to get perfect.

With regards to the GRFs, is everyone happy with this list:

As provided by MonkeyNut? Any others that should be included, or not? Also, looking at the FIRS, it replaces all the industries? And then you need to be running the ECS & FIRS vehicle set to allow you to outfit all the current in-game vehicles so they can handle the new cargo created? I assume this works with the UK Railway set as that adds new wagons and so on, its all compatible?
