** Official omg I just got my 5870 thread **

the cards fan is definately quieter on auto than my other cards, but those annoying electronic sounds even though quiet get on my nerves.. i would have thought that would be a thing of the past these days tbh

Sub 9s super PI run

superpi-1.png

To give you an idea of how fast these i7 chips are - the superpi world record in 01/09/2007 was held by a C2D running at 5525mhz - it ONLY managed a fal 9s run :-)

Seems the board is topping out : 216mhz 217mhz let me run superpi but it was a little slower and prime95 gave an error one one core after 45 mins. A shame as I think the processor can go further. I could play with the voltages but I'm happy where it is.

What I'm doing now is downclocking to only (only - heh) 4.2ghz and dropping the vcore - down to 1.36v and stable atm. Temps have come down to high 60's on lod - this feels like the swetspot for speed/voltage/heat. Still does a superpi run of 9.2s ;-) I also cracked off a new Vantage score with the gfx card oc'd to 890/1290 - 18600 :-)

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dmv=1445444

Vantage show the clockspeed as 4000mhz - turbo boost knocks the multiplier up to 21 under load giving 4.2ghz - but it's not active at the start of the test which is when Vantage collects its sys info.

tbh that is a crap time. you should be getting much quicker than that. My e8500 @ 4.9ghz got like 9.3 sec or something with ddr2 that didnt overclock much.

yes you can rma it if the cap squeal is that loud, saying that it might go away after being used a bit

Would i be able to RMA this card or not?

I've already said to use Vsync, that will make it go, playing games without Vsync isn't acceptable anyway (to me atleast). If it dont go, and Vsync is definitely working, then somethings wrong.

Whats your res BTW?

Any word on these fitting an Antec 300 yet? I was looking at my 4890 in mine, and an extra 1.5 inch would be really cutting it close. Thanks.

Anyone running HD5870 in crossfire with the Corsair 650W psu and core i7?
I was thinking of getting a single HD5870 initially and then adding the other ( my 4870PCS need replacing as it's losing video randomly) but ould like to know if crossfire is a no go with the PSU

it's not the same noise as when the card is displaying the spinning cube, the noise i get is a light whine which seems to come and go.. it's not loud but fairly quiet and i can hear it in windows not just while gaming.
I can hear it when i first boot up as well

It will probably work, but i'd get a new PSU anyway.
With OCCT software which completely maxes out the power load of two 5870's (the largest load they could ever possibly experience), the load power is 664 watts with Crossfired 5870's on a i7 system.

It's extremely unlikely any game will use that amount of load power though, no matter how demanding. Just about any game will not draw more than 500 watts at the very very most on the same setup. So you should be ok for gaming. If you never run something like OCCT or furmark which draw more power than any game will (by atleast 100+ watt), your'll be ok.

Bit off topic but OCCT will crash a 4xxx, and 3xxx ATI card - it draws so much power it overloads the card. AMD/ATI moved to hardware based overcurrent protection with the 5xxx series. Something they should have done ages ago.

Thanks

I've been thinking of getting a new base system anyway - and since the OCUK systems use the 650W was interested whether they were good enough - I guess I'll phone them up and ask if it possible to put in a 750 or 850W instead

(If the worse come to it though I can always build (just can't be bothered with the hassle this time considering what i was considering changing nor really have the time)

All 4 of my 3780 Sapphires when i had them passed OCCT but my 1900xt Master does not.

Right now i have a 22" but at some point 24".. just some game benchmarks like stalker show the 4870 1gb gobbling up the ram, worried the framerate might not keep up at higher settings on newer games to come. I saw the minimum FPS go from 16 to 25 from the 1gb 4870 to the 2gb at 1920 x 1200. Bit-tech review
I'm going to look for the 2GB version. Right now I've got 3x24" screens, and I might go for 30" within a year. But I want to see the price on the 2GB first.

The noise it sounded like you were hearing was the infamous 'coil whine' that seems to occur when the card is running very high frames per sec. However i have not heard of that ocuring when booting up windows.
There is a chance there is something wrong with the fan possibly a hardware fault.
End of the day you paid 300 quid, if you are not happy with it then send it back for replacement
