*** Official OMG I've finally got my 5850 thread **

VRM hit 92C in furmark after about 90secs.

Heatsinks not enough so I'd better get a fan in there or a full block.

VRM temp 73C after 5 loops of crysis bench with 4xAA. Probably be OK for now but will hinder OC when volt modding bios appears.

Good chance this Zalman ZM-RHS70 will fit. Fixing centers look very close.

For 3 quid it's worth getting one to find out. Thanks for finding that.

That leaves just one lowly one at the other end of the card? I think it'll still need a well placed fan in my build.

Yeah, that's what I need to do.

Possible fix for voltage tweaking has been posted on the G3D forum. Can I post the link here?

Well it appears to work on the Sapphire bios! :D

The only issue I have now is that when I install GPU clock tool it sets the voltage to 1.6!!

HWmonitor says the voltage is unchanged. Core temp has risen a little though. Dunno.

Greebo, did you set the clocks with GPU tool?

Unwinder, the guy who posted that setting, I think might be the author of Rivatuner. Is seems Rivatuner is immune to the clock limit.

After that we add the Device ID of the Radeon HD 5850 to the Rivatuner.cfg to make the Rivatuner 2.24c compatible to the new graphics card. This allows us to increase the frequencies to higher values than in the Overdrive menu. Our Radeon HD 5850s were stable up to 830/2400 MHz, which is almost as much as the bigger HD 5870 is running at.

Send the GF down the pub and get that fan on 100%!! :D

I think I could keep the core cool enough but not the VRMs. I'll stick a fan on them tomorrow and give it a go.

So by flashing the HD5850 with a HD5870's BIOS file you are effectively tricking the card into thinking it's a HD5870? Does this unlock any extra processors (5870=1600 5840=1440) or just it just increase the maximum clock rate?

No we haven't flashed any bios', just edited the config of afterburner to enable the voltage control to work.

To modify the database to make it use your card settings try to close Afterburner, open your profile file with notepad (VEN_1002&DEV_6899&SUBSYS_0B001002&REV_00&BUS_1&DE V_0&FN_0.cfg stored into .\Profiles subfolder into application folder), and add the following text to it:

[Settings]
VT1165_Defaults = 17 33

Then start Afterburner again and see if it helps. It is important to add that if you have UAC enabled, then you must temporarily disable it prior to editing the file.

How can i monitor that? GPU-Z?

It's on the Thermal sensors page of GPU tool. Enable reading on all the VDDCs and click start.

Getting a good boost in fps going to 900core with 1.2v and only seeing 41C. VDDC cooling needs improving though before I can go any higher.
