Thing is with im stuck running my ram 280 x 10 : 140 = 200mhz. Any more over 200 and my memory gets flakey I have found.

What's the OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC4000 Dual Channel Platinum Series kit like?

Very good so I hear, especially with DFI boards.

Ok, and I assume it was the SMD that you "fixed" ?

Nope, didn't even have to do that! All I had to do was to put the CPU into a different Mobo, plugged in my baby Raptor and the thing booted into windows fine and wanted re-activating. Put evey thing onto the other mobo. No show. Quick ram change from my 2Gig PC3200 from OCZ to my G.Skill PC4000 and it was well away! Yay!

Excellent news, really pleased for you, I know what it feels like I killed an FX55 that HURT.

Ouch! You killed and FX55?! Dude, I feel your pain!

But thanks again for all your help guys. Its much appreciated.

Quick update, after taking the IHS off and almost crying 'cos I thought I'd killed it its working, fully functional AND my load temps have dropped from about 50C to 44. So a 6C drop.

I'm feeling very, very proud indeed - I'm going to push her further and i'll keep you lot updated.

you void your warranty for a 6c drop?
Where you not stable at 2.8ghz at 1.4v?
cause 50c at load is fine IMO.

I voided my warrenty for the chance at 3ghz, So I'll be trying for that next week and by the looks of things its seems pretty set to do so.

Also I like my temps being as low as poss. I know I voided the warrenty etc etc and I know in my head that 50C is fine, but I still worry...

Oh well. Lets hope I can get the magic 3.

what you doing with the fx60 agent?
Why don't you buy a phase change unit, you'll definitely hit 3ghz then ;)

I like your thinking Teggs, keep it up. But as for the FX60, the 175 and 170 I have in their boxes atm, they are going back. But I'm sure at some point i'll get some phase. But for the time being. I've gotta save. I need my own house. I can't mess around with these computers for too much longer...

if you sell all your bits you could probably afford a house :D

the trick is to buy a house then remortgage it for the pc upgrades ;)

i'm not knocking you :)

good luck with the 3ghz

im passed worrying about temps my pc hasn't crashed ever at 2.8ghz 50-55c underload at points depending on ambient temps etc....

so its fine. :D

Thanks Easyrider. I hope I get it. Or i'll be re-ordering the FX60 from out beloved OcUK...

Are you using the stock HSF for your opty? And I agree, 50-55c is absoutly fine mate.

I'm using AS5 and a zalman 9500 at 7v :D
TWO 120mm fans front and rear in an AKASA eclipse 62 case :D

Quick update for you lot.

I'm at 2.9ghz with 1.44v, be it 290*10 or 306*9.5.

I cannot get 3ghz stable atm. Webbo, any suggestions?

And I'm loving this board!! She can do over 330HTT and be 100% rock steady.

Ah, thankyou DFI!!

have you tried different BIOSes Agent?
how are you testing? i presume you have you ram on a divider rather than running at 290mhz?

Hi Teggs, thanks for the swift reply.

I'm running the latest bios (29/3 I think) and the RAM is on a 166 divider, but for time time being its on a 9/10 'cos i'm testing my ram... :D

Apart from upping the Vcore, any other voltages I should think about bumping?

Agent

Raise the Chipset and LDT voltage a notch. Tbh it hasn't helped much in my case but you never know it might help you. Oh and don't use .5 multi's because that lowers your memory bandwidth (don't ask me how - confirmed in Sandra) and A64 memory controllers don't like .5 multi's iirc.

Are you testing CPU or memory? If you are testing how far you can stretch your CPU you really ought to take memory out of the equation as its much simpler that way. Once you have found your max CPU(FSBxMulti) then start on the memory. Doing both is problematic when trying to find out whats causing instability.

I take it temps are a problem if you don't want to increase vcore? What are your temps?

*edit** I just ordered some Gskill HZ, hopefully that will give me some extra headroom than the 3500LL's. Oh and I couldn't resist an opty 146 for £99!

The other voltages are:
LDT = 1.2v (stk)
Chipset = 1.5v (stk)
you could up them to 1.3 and 1.7 and see if that helps
Other than that you've probably reached the chips limit (on air)

I know you've probably already answered this but what cooler are you using? and does it fit ok with your "stripped" Opty?

W3bbo - I now know about the .5 multis. My memory has been running about 10Mhz less than it should be on the dividers so atleast I know why now... I'll up the FSB again and go down to a 9x multi.
As for temps. I'm at about 44 - 46C load at 2.9ghz with 1.44v. It tends to fail prime close to 50C.

Teggs - I'll try upping the voltage on the LTD and chipset. But as for cooling i'm using a Thermaltake Typhoon with an uprated 125CFM fan on it. I'll probably take the fan off it, hoover out the fins and then put some more fans around the RAM and the Passive coolers on the mobo...

Thanks again guys. But if you have any more flashes of inspiration it would be much appreciated.

For a quick fix for temps take the side panel off and reverse the rear case fan so it is blowing rather than sucking (intake instead of exhuast). The Typhoon needs lots of fresh air if it is going to work correctly and reversing my case fans dropped 4c from my CPU temp although the PWMIC temps went up by 3c(cool air coming from other side of case so makes sense). That little difference should confirm whether or not it is the CPU temp and not the CPU 'wall' that is holding you back. Also have you done the typhoon 'mod'? When you take the fan off you will see two 'open areas' on the opposite sides of the fins. Stuff these with some of the foam packaging that the typhoon came with and this will force more air through the fins rather than down the sides for better HS cooling, this again got me a 2c drop.

Ok ta, i ordered a Thermaltake Typhoon before the weekend as my Gigabyte G-power has started whining at me. Once i've got everything sorted i may be brave and pop the lid off my CPU.

Aaaahhh, more fodder for the machine...

Anyways. I'll do the Big Typhoon "mod" tonight if my bike doesn't sidetrack me (gotta change the gearing 'cos i'm running single speed blah blah blah, off topic maybe?)

But yes. I'll stick some more "random" fans about the place on my mobo and we shall see what happens. Also, I think i'll move my HDDs about too so they are at the top of the case so the fresh air that comes in is fresh and not pre warmed by the Harddrives.

TBH, I don't think the Thermaltake Kandalf cases have very good cooling. :(
