*** Official Planetside 2 Thread ***

I'm not impressed by all this SOE - ProSiebenSat.1 crap.

We (Europeans) will get a bum deal as usual, at least this time I know its coming.

Region locking to Europe only and its all gonna be out sourced to that German company that has a reeeaaaaly crap reputation for being amateurish, has been hacked regularly, publishes personal data and is just a genuinely crap company.

SOE are farming all their euro zone games to it them..

To be honest I really wasn't fussed at all with the European servers only aspect, I'm more concerned with having to transfer my account details to a company with a poor record in handling such things.

Next step; No Pro7 accounts! :p

I'd be suprised if that happened, though I would prefer it if that were the case. The issue is that the contract between Sony and Pro7 has already been signed, and was several weeks ago. Meaning that they are contractually down as being the ones to run the servers. Meaning sony have to somehow convince them to give them server control, likely meaning that Pro7 won't be gaining any money from the microtransactions that the game has, meaning that they aren't getting that revenue stream they said they wanted in the contract.

What the heck is all this proseibien.1 stuff about? Wait.. what? Locking regions wtf? Selling our details to another company? hmm...

Cheers Efour2!

I wonder sometimes, do the people who make these decisions actively look for ways to annoy the people who pay for their products?

Surely at some point in the planning stages someone said :

"Do you think anyone will care if we lock out the European Market to a different company and prevent them from playing on the US server while forcing them to deal with a company who does't actually have anything to do with the game they are playing?"

It defies belief sometimes!

The answer is probably

"Yeah, I reckon they will be upset with it but WoW was succesful and coupled with a region lock. There will be a vocal minority about the issue that will slowly calm down and it saves us $xx million by not having to achieve x, y and z"

"Jim, region lock could be a real issue and only saves us $yy thousands. Besides, the Klingons hate region locks too."

"Let's look at this and post on twitter to calm those crazies! We'll delay and make the Day One DLC anyhow"

"Jim, this is an mmo"

"Spock, screw you and your patches, I'm in this for the $$ baby"

To be fair, looking at it from purely a business decision, I see why they did it. I mean, its a free 2 play game, meaning they only make money from the microtransactions. Which means they are hoping that lots of people actually spend money, since every player who doesn't is costing them money in bandwidth. By selling the rights for the EU side of Planetside 2, they get a nice chunk of money up front, no matter how well or terribly PS2 performs. And in exchange, Pro7 gets all the risk, and all the reward. They get the money from the microtransactions, they, presumably, pay for the bandwidth costs. Either way, Sony makes money from the deal, as opposed to the possibility that they might lose money if they kept it all to themselves.

But the way its been done, splitting the community like this after forcing them all together onto one US server in PS1. That's the stupid part of all this.

Why would anyone want to play an FPS on an american server? People complain enough about lag when playing in a UK server!

Sure if people have american friends they will miss out on that but the same thing happened with LoL a while back (they split europe in 2) and sure people complained, and then it happened and nobody cared any more.

I hate the micro transaction model. I would rather pay for the game.

Also, as WoW was mentioned... didn't WoW have region locks from day one? This is a sequel release of a game that we expected certain things from, and this wasn't one of them! :-(

Play in the USA? Why wouldn't you want to play with as many people as possible? ESPECIALLY if you are playing at unusual hours, then european servers may be pretty dead, whilst US servers may suit your times better.

Thing is, I don't think it would have been such a large issue if PS1 had continued with two servers. But when Werner was closed and EU players were forced onto the US server, they made lots of new friends, created new outfits, and joined existing ones. They merged the communities. Now they are trying to tear them apart again.
Plus what about people who work strange hours, like people working night shifts. EU servers will be dead, there would be people playing on US servers but they can't join?

In other news, its Light Assault week!
