I need some help before I become ever more bored and fustrated!

I'm a heavy and seem unable to kill most targets or end up one hit killed, the problem seems to be down to nearly everyone using those MAX classes. Like what's the point also of having a rocket launcher if it doesn't do a great deal of damage to vehicles! I've hit tanks with the same kind of tank and it doesn't do a great deal of damage!

I want to hurt others as much as they hurt me, but i'm not willing to pay to win either

Tanks armour got a buff vs everything except AP shells, so they're tougher than they used to be. It's because as a tank you tend to get hit with several rockets at once if you come up vs a squad, rockets to the rear still pack a punch though.

If you want to fight vehicles as a tank save your certs for the AP cannon.

Edit: Performance has always seemed ok to me, only ever drops in huge fights.

Which faction and gun are you using Neil?

Are you in an outfit yet, because that is really the easiest way to get to grips with things as you always have someone to ask whilst you're playing.

Remember to use your shield as a heavy (press F).

If you find you mostly die to explosions (grenades, vehicles, rockets etc) consider certing into Flak armour under your suit slot. If it's mostly bullets killing you cert nanoweave (up to level 4) this will give you more health so more chance of surviving.

For dealing with a MAX unless you have C4 on Light assault it is generally best to keep your distance and wear them down or try to take them down with others, use your rocket launcher and grenades if you get a chance but don't engage them in close, your gun will damage them but it will take a lot of rounds.

Re Tanks: There are three different types of cannon, HEAT which is what all characters start with. This basically does medium damage to both infantry and vehicles. HE which does low damage to vehicles but has high explosive splash so has generally been used for killing infantry and finally AP which does high damage to vehicles but has next to no explosive splash so unless you directly hit infantry you won't hurt them.

It could be you were attacking an enemy equipped with AP in which case they have a damage advantage over you. As in most games front armour is the strongest, rear the weakest, is another thing to remember.

Ok so you're NC, as a Heavy you start with the NC6 Gauss SAW, as far as the starting weapons go it's pretty unforgiving and due to it's slower rate of fire isn't the best weapon for in close. It's basically high damage per bullet but low rate of fire. It shines at medium to long range and you can snipe with it if you just tap single shots and let the recoil reset, but it really needs to be certed up to use it to it's full potential.

Advanced Forward Grip, Compensator, 2x Reflex Sight and High Velocity ammo (optional) is how I run it but that is 330 certs + 100 for the ammo.

Note: If you equip a compensator and try to hipfire your cone of fire will be all over the place.

How do you like to fire your guns, aiming down sights or hip firing?

If the latter I'd say go to VR training (button on warp terminals in warp gate) and look at some other LMGs such as the GD-22S (cheap, about 100 certs to unlock - but try it first), EM1 or Anchor.

Note: You can try any gun in VR training with any attachments. You can also trial any gun in actual combat for 30 minutes by going to the gun on the store, press unlock then press the blue trial button at the bottom of the screen. You will need to go to an equipment terminal to equip the gun you're trialling. You can only trial each gun once a month and I think it's one trial per day. I would recommend you try weapons in the VR training area and then trial them before you unlock anything.

Most of the weapons are (more or less) even on each class. It takes about 4/5 decent body hits to kill a similar class, more if they are better armoured and quite a bit more for MAX. Get a decent gun sight, it helps immensely.

My question:
Flying.
How the hell do you do a steady hover with the nose pointed down? Is it even remotely possible?

I can fly, pull high g turns, dogfight and happily kite missiles into rocks/trees (tip: most of the aircraft's control surfaces seem to react faster going up faster than down - need to loose height fast? Roll over and do an inverted dive, roll out of it once your behind something and before you hit the floor :D ).

Hovering with the nose down and I creep forward pretty quick, is there a way to counter it while staying on target? I can pull back with the vertical thrusters fired and I'll start to move back but it's SLOOOW. I see guys sat hammering rockets etc into targets all the time (turretting) but I can't seem to get my head around it at all.

Do I need to up the sensitivity (so I can flick the nose around faster) and kinda yoyo between forward + firing and backwards with the nose up? Really can't get the VTOL side of flying at all (at least air to ground support kinda flying).

Don't think alerts happen at set times, they just have a minimum gap between them.

Squad beacon, when you're squad leader you will have the squad beacon in your last weapon slot. Whatever class (except Max) you play it will be in a slot after all the other stuff you usually carry. You select it and deploy it like an ammo pack on the engineer.
If you were made squad leader after spawning you would need to resupply to get a beacon.

Converting points: If you were on Indar it's probably because you didn't have a lattice connection to the base you were trying to cap.

thansk qel. whats lattice connection?

If you look on the map of Indar (the only continent with it on currently), it's the lines between each base. So starting with your factions warpgate you need to capture each base along a line in turn in order to capture the next one. If you have no connection to a base along these lines you cannot capture it.

It's a new system (well a variation on one from PS1) they're bringing in because they didn't feel the Hex system (as is still on Esamir/Amerish) directed the fights enough, whereas with this they're trying to have more concentrated fights and a sense of a frontline to attack/defend.

I prefer it as it stops ghost capping.

So I was trying to get into this playing as engineer but didn't really get too far! I joined instant action to be dropped into the middle of a huge cluster**** of tanks and got run over trying to repair several :D

Is engineer a bad choice if I'm playing on my own? I thought there might be a little more teamplay... perhaps I'll try infiltrator/sniper type role next time

Try never to go the one class I chop and change depending on the situation.

For teamplay, if you can keep your head down well enough medic is usually an easy way to a few certs. Just sit behind a good solid bit of cover and try your best to keep the people sharing the cover alive, res those that go down (if it's safe).

Nother question, can a key be bound to the medikit? So rather than having to equip and use it can just be used immediately?

I primarily play medic with some engineer, but any class if it's needed. Just generally there are never enough medics around.

Nothing wrong with going into combat on a medic, get an additional grenade slot and a couple of certs in a good weapon and off you go.

I'm still getting to grips with this game. Previously it just demanded too much from my pc (ancient build).

I've now upgraded my graphics card but it still seems to be struggling with my CPU; I'm looking to upgrade that now, it's long overdue.

PS2 does seem a pretty system intensive game.

Anyhow, the next step is to set myself up with an 'outfit', I've heard it's way better playing it in a group. Some of my clanmates play but we're too wee to have an outfit of just us.
