**Official Portal 2 thread**

I don't own L4D-2 and have rarely played L4D however the sales figures alone show they are far from being "duds".
Obviously so many blind Valve sheep buying a fanmod packaged as full games must ALL be right & anyone with an opposite view must be wrong

Are you for real? You wont buy a game because it is not at the cutting edge of graphics?

Since when was portal about graphics?

After finding out about the misleading Source Filmmaker pre-rendered footage being used (before that it was a blind buy for me @ full price) I won't buy this game full price at release because I have been ripped off in the past by Valves shoddy misleading marketing which looks like its in full force here but it will not work with me again as I am not a blind must buy anything Valve make person

Gfx are not everything but if Portal2 was able to sell on its own merits why do Valve insist on releasing all this impressive pre-rendered footage....I tell you why because it looks very dated & most people not unreasonably want some progression when they part with their hard earned money!

If Portal2 is just Portal1 with more puzzles/levels its not a full price product IMO so I can wait until it drops to £7.49 in the Steam sales. Portal1 was never a full priced product as most got it with The Orange Box (which was a very underhand way to make the legions of hardcore HL2 fans buy EP2 as Valve knew they did not want to wait for the standalone EP2 release).

I'm not sure if this information is in the rest of thread but I'm undecided whether to get this for PC or Xbox, I loved Portal 1. The reason being I don't know if my PC, or rather my graphics card will run it. I'm using an onboard Radeon HD3000. I generally game on my 360 so haven't bothered buying a decent card. My CPU and memory are very much up to date and not a problem.

I was also thinking of re-installing Half Life 2, will my card run that too?

Think I will wait until its released now & hear what others have to say about it rather than chance buying another dated dud (like L4D1+2).

I was a bit concerned about the graphics after seeing the opening gameplay. I saw the room the character was in and it looks just like L4D graphics :(. It was only when some light started streaming in that it looked cool, but maybe that was because they were using that movie making tool.

And what's wrong with L4D? In terms of gameplay or graphics? Both are still great. It really saddens me that there are people this concerned with graphics.

The fact it only requires shader model 2.0 is a bit of a giveaway. Nevertheless, it's the puzzles I'm getting it for.

Portal has never been about cutting edge graphics, Portal is about atmosphere. And the graphics are good, I love them.

LFD is over 2 years old. If in that time they haven't bothered to make the game look any better then it does look lazy when for the same money you can buy Skyrim/Rage/BF3 which look amazing and which the devs have really worked hard on - not just gameplay but graphics too.

Just my opinion, I have already pre-ordered Portal 2 since I loved the first one. Just saying:
£30 for a 2 year old car
or
£30 for a brand new shiny car ;)

Your analogy is crap. If the 2 year old car is better than any brand new car then your entire argument falls down, hell your argument only works if the old car and the new car were actually the same game which means it doesn't work on any level.

Don't know about you but i didn't preorder Portal 2 (for £24 btw, not £30) because i was expecting it to look cutting edge. It will look plenty good enough and more importantly, be awesome.

I think AWPC is just trying to be different... not entirely sure what he got 'ripped off' by and i've no idea what videos were made using the film maker. Clearly he'd buy it without pause if it came with GFWL

Just chucking it out there that all that recent impressive looking media is created by pre-rendering game assets with the new Source Filmmaker tool if you can find some of the actual ingame footage (which Valve are not keen to highlight for obvious reasons) the game looks really dated from what I have seen so far the new lighting scheme they added looks out of place & a little strange!

Think I will wait until its released now & hear what others have to say about it rather than chance buying another dated dud (like L4D1+2).

Just go on Youtube if you want to see some in game footage. L4D1/2 were great games! Not 'dated dud's' like you describe them.

Except you are calling people who buy it fanboys, and calling a game with an average of 89 on metacritic a 'fanmod packed as full game', which in no way it is.

I think you have no idea what you are talking about, stating opinion just to get a response (it worked, well done), and I suggest you should go back to playing COD and Halo on Xbox 360.

It might just about run Half Life 2, not sure about Portal 2. The minimum settings are higher for it.

*Reading comprehension fail*

We were discussing the graphics of the game, not the gameplay, so my analogy is perfectly apt i.e paying the same money for older technology (and I'm sure no-one will disagree that id Tech 5 and Frostbite 2 are superior engines to Source). As I said, I loved Portal 1, so I am sure the gameplay of the sequel will be awesome.

Portal reminds me of the stalekr stalker games in this respect.

the engine isn't the best and nore are the textures yet the art design is fantastic and really plays to atmosphere of the game rather than just looking good but just wrong over all.

lighting in stalker's case you forget the textures are bad or the general poor gfx cause the lighting just sucks you in and portal hits just the right art style for the games atmosphere and sucks you in to the point you don't notice sources rather poor "geometry/models".

Are you for real? You wont buy a game because it is not at the cutting edge of graphics?

Ironic given his love of the force unleashed which uses textures that would look old on a ps2 game.

Your analogy is still ******** even if you were talking 100% about graphics, which you never said, you implied you were talking about the game as a whole. The car vs a 2 year old is still meaningless unless you talk about the same car and that can NOT be applied to games. If in 2 years time Valve release Portal 2 with advanced graphics and get you to chosoe between that and the original Portal 2 for the same price it still means nothing. If you try and refer it to anything else it has more holes than chicken wire.

Wasn't sure about getting this off the bat as you know its going to be 50% off within a few months, but damn it, I'm incredibly tempted now :(.

I get the feeling it'll be one of those games that'll be interesting and fun to experience first hand without spoilers and if I don't play it quickly there's no doubt I will accidentally read or hear something about it that will ruin it.

Woo this is released the day after I get back from my house hunting trip :D.

As with all games you really have to look at it as a whole to make your final judgement. A game is as good as all of it's components combined & where it may falter in one area it may pick up in another.

It's personal preference but I'd pass up on ultra smooth top notch graphics for amazing overall game play any day. For me it's about the puzzles & the minimalistic story that comes with as a by-product. Co-op looks interesting too.

If you played Portal 1 & loved it, no doubt you are drooling in anticipation for Portal 2. If you aren't ... why not! :p

Personally portals graphics are some of my favorite in a game - period. Graphics don't have to be mind-blowing to be good, but by no means are portals graphics poor or average.

I am so looking forward to this game!

Im a big fan of Ricky Gervais, Steven Merchant etc.. and the fact that Steven Merchant is doing a voice over for me, was a stroke of genius!

This is going to be one hell of a good comedy!
