**Official Portal 2 thread**

It is a bit short though for single player. I was expecting more. In the E3 demos and stuff they had lots of areas and deadly traps that arent in the final game, in the demos you seem to fly through them. They looked pretty cool but wouldnt have added much to the game I guess.

I think Valve have said...

Some of the videos shown used puzzles that merely looked cool because after all, a video of someone solving a puzzle slowly doesn't have the same effect.

Pneumatic Diversity Vents were cut because Portal playtesters didn't like that they sucked away everything but Chell. Besides, its far more fun to watch turrets bounce around with Repulsion Gel on them :D

Completed portal 2 took me just under 5 hours. Cant believe they cut stuff out was looking forward to some of the stuff. Its a bit short and confusing just hope co-op is any good. Didnt have much use of the gel much was hoping it would be longer. Took me about 7 hours to complete portal. Great Game though plays well on max settings.

The guy who said this game is dumbed down compared to the first sounds like a hipster saying it for the sake of it. This game was much harder than the first, especially the coop. Nearly finished that though.

I know, it's complete and utter rubbish. I'm ten hours into the game now and just at the start of Chapter 8. I've had a LOT of fun so far, no cheating at all, and I like to take my time wandering round and exploring things. It's ingenious and amazingly well thought-out. Video game art. It's cleverer, varied and harder than the first.

Plus the 'old' elements were a complete stroke of genius.

Test chamber 19 alone took me one hour. When it clicked it was amazing, great moment.

A lot of people seem to want to rush through it and boast that it took them no time at all. For me it's all about taking time with it, savouring the game. There's so much to appreciate.

Wondered what happened to them. They are actually kinda in one of The Ball's portal 2 levels where you have to do a switch puzzle to alter their route and then...eh solve the puzzle to do with them...dont want to spoil it. Though its not quite to the extent of how they were shown in some of the early preview vids of portal 2.

Shame as they would have been fun to play with but I can kinda understand why they didn't make it, sucking stuff into them would have got a bit stale puzzle wise after one chamber, having switches that alter their paths usually ends up as trial and error which looses fun quickly, though it could have been a neat way of launching cubes, paint or what ever long distances to places you couldnt portal to. The whole it sucks everything but chell into it thing would have been weird and a bit of dodgy design so it makes sense that way as well.

7 hours to complete Portal??? How?

I'm not sure if you're trolling me or not. :p

I actually feel sorry for anyone who's taken under eight hours to finish the whole game. There's just so much to appreciate, they must have sprinted through the whole thing. It's like being given the freshest seafood platter in the Mediterranean and scoffing it in five minutes with a cup of Typhoo.

He said 7 hours for portal 1, not portal 2 :)

Also please don't feel sorry for me. I took 6-7 hours to play through, at my own pace not rushing, looking about, listening and taking it all in. Loved every minute of it. If I went any slower I would have been artificially lowering my pace which would have taken me out of the game.

Don't get me wrong, people who rushed through it to get to the end quickly or finish it asap, I think would have missed a whole lot and I would never do it but who is to stop them from doing so. Its the same thing as collectors who never take something out its packaging, do they get any more or less satisfaction compared to the kid who ripped open the plastic to play with the toy or the man re-reading his dog eared copy of his favourite book that he carried about for travelling for years instead of keeping it pristine on a shelf.

Take it at your own pace, do it your own way and appreciate it for what you think its worth.

This seems to be a recurring theme.

Perhaps there is little appetite for longer games amongst mainstream gamers today.

No it's just after a decade of the basic FPS games there's little new to see and they do get repetitive very quickly so cutting out the extra 4 hours of random corridor shooting and just having the 4-8hours of the set pieces and little connections = much more interesting and exciting.

Games are still heavily scripted and opponent AI still very very bad, on harder difficulties they don't get smarter just better aim and more health, so sp becomes old very quickly, and people move on to mp which stays fresh.

Just finished this and think it's one of my top 3 fave games... even better than the first Portal and not at all dumbed down. I'm normally the first to moan about a game being dumbed down, but not this. Everything is better than the first game... apart from the ending credits song.
If Half-Life 3 can combine the Portal gun with the puzzles and all the other elements of Half-Life it could well be the most perfect game ever.

Dont think anyone has mentioned this either, but the game has excellent animations!

The Source engine is showing it's age though, but still looks good and this is the best looking Source game so far. Dont know why people are surprised it runs well though, all Source games lack lots of dynamic lighting, which is very demanding. They do have some dynamic lights, just not loads like most new games. A lot the lighting is 'baked' onto textures (it's a flat 2D shadow texture over the original texture), its not real-time lighting. And obviously the textures themselfs are lower res than a lot of other new PC games, and polygon counts are not high - lots of flat walls and so on. Yet people give Source games credit for running well... well, thats because of the reasons above, not the engine being amazing. Most other games wouldn't get away with doing these types of things without the game looking really poor, but Valve can because they highly polish everything, do quality level design, animations, and clever ideas, which makes a limited engine still look decent.

And i dont know how anyone can do this game in around 6 hours or less on first play without cheating, rushing like mad, or googling how to do areas. Dont care what they say, they're a lier and it's just for there e-peen, when in reality they just look like a stupid immature kid to everyone else.

I was wondering if the timer was broken for anyone else or just me. It kept saying 2 hours no matter how long i was on it for on Tuesday. The achievements are a little glitched too. For some reason i didn't get the White Gel achievement and someone i know didn't get 'You Monster'. Not that it matters, i've got at least 2 more playthroughs on SP to go through this week, 1 with Dev Commentary, 1 without.

i was just about to play portal 2 last night, unfortunately as i had no internet connection at my fiance, it was frustrating to see "NO STEAM" on the front screeen of the portal 2 :(

rifle found trying to change the fov in console marked his game as having cheats enabled an so didn't get a few achievements.

So is it true we cannot change fov in this title? Funny you just mention fov Tefal, when I just came here specifically to ask about it. :)
Bit strange a Valve title not allowing to change it.

Nah i've not even touched console and neither did my friend (to my knowledge). It gave me all the other progress achievements but not White Out for some reason, not that it matters, I'll get it again when I go through there with dev commentary, thought it normally deactivated achievements but apparently not this time.

Started playing again through last night this time with developer commentary turned on, as with all Valve games the same theme ran throughout all the audio pieces "play testing", its that what makes it feel so seamless and intuitive, none of the puzzles step outside the game mechanics that you've been introduced to earlier.

Why bring up RPG or RTS?

Hexen, Heretic, Doom, they had no real story at all and all they had to do to make the games longer was throw in more random levels. Quake 2 had story but again, it was very un-engaging and you were essentially just gunning down enemies as it told you to. Deus Ex and GTA have nothing to do with this.

Absolutely none of the games you mentioned, not even Deus Ex, had the same depth to it that Portal 2 has with regards to attention to detail and story telling. Just gone through the first chapter with dev commentary and its unbelievable how much effort they put into your 'wake up' scene and that was only the first couple of minutes.

Why?
Hexen and Heretic has a great story. http://www.ravengames.com/hexen/story-world.php
Heretic http://www.ravengames.com/heretic/story.php
also doom wiki is cool http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Entryway

do you often change your fov to above 90 in non mp, non fps games?

I just thought changing the fov, may help to alleviate the unmistakeable console look/perspective of Portal 2/
Could you change the F.O.V. in the original Portal?
Ah well; just starting Level 5.

The timer is bugged, it's also apparently the main reason people are complaining that the campaign is so short, they see 2 hours and think to themselves omg I've only got two hours out of my £30 game.
