**Official Portal 2 thread**

Wheatley's Cockney accent heard in the "Meet Wheatley" video shown at E3 2010 uses a placeholder voice provided by Valve animator Richard Lord.[3] Due to very positive feedback, Valve considered at some point making the voice official.[7] Later Lord himself emphasized that his voice was temporary, saying that "theres no way you will be dissapointed with the final voice - im over teh moon with who it might be." [sic],[4] until it was announced that Stephen Merchant, who also has a British accent, would provide the final voice.

I too preferred the former voice......oh well...

I absolutely cannot stand Stephen Merchant. Been slightly dissapointed ever since the news was first revealed last year.

Didn't know you could buy the PS3 version and link your PSN account to Steam and then download it for the PC for free :)

They announced it a while back. Only works from PS3 to PC though, you can't buy it on PC and get it on PS3.

I'm sure in the event that people don't like Stephen Merchant, there WILL be a mod that just replaces his audio files with something else or silence.

Well you can't replace it with silence, unless you've already run through the game, as it's likely you'll need to hear what hes saying. People will probably just run the audio files through a program and make his voice sound synthetic though, hope its modded fast.

I don't like the old or the new voice although yes the old one is better if I had a choice.

It isn't just the voice either, it's the fact you aren't on your own any more but there is another 'character' in the game world who you are working alongside which bothers me. That's why I would like to know how much it features in the (SP) game.

Hmm I think I'm gonna reserve pre-ordering this and wait and see what people reckon. I'm not in the 'Valve can do no wrong' camp :)

Can't believe the hate that Steven Merchant is getting, am really looking forward to hearing him in game.

Although I do think that one of the joys of Portal was being so alone.

Turn subtitles on? Then just wait for a voice over mod to pop up in a week or so.

Pretty bemused by the people complaining about a new character. What were you expecting? Another 15 test chambers and nothing more? Valve have been saying since it was announced that they wanted to add more depth to the SP story.

He's there to ease people new to the concepts into the game play and deepen the story like Glados was in the first.

No problem with a new character, but the fact that they had to choose one of the least funny, irritating ***** on tv, with a highly irritating voice. He's one of those people you just want to smack.

They should have chosen Simon Pegg or something.

Was the person in a demo video Stephen Merchant? Didn't sound anything like him?

No it was Richard Lord who is an animator at Valve (Wheatley). Or you may be thinking of the voice of Cave Johnson, CEO of Aperture Science who you will also hear and has the ability to get on my ****.
