!!**Official RAGE Thread**!!

60 fps = not hard when your graphic resolution looks like this

and even better if you use sprites

Oh how the mighty Carmack has fallen. One-time golden boy of the graphics industry working on new tech for cutting edge machines, now relagated to a developer for a big corporation tinkering with ancient consoles..

Is it a personal rule for you to post in here every 48 hours with another "old whine-o" about the game?

Uh right...

Well there's plenty of headroom in my PC fro it too take advantage of. I don't think CPU usage went over 30% and GPU usage over 40% all at a constant 60FPS at 1920x1200 4xAA.

Same here, I'm playing on a single GPU (GTX480), at 2560*1600, 4xAA, and I'm only seeing ~60% GPU, and ~600Mb VRAM usage for the most part.

It might be better for PC users if Doom 4 isn't released until the next-gen consoles arrive - the baseline graphical quality will be much higher. We already know how well the engine can scale downwards (the rage-on-iphone demo), so I suppose they could release for the current gen simultaneously, if there was still a viable market.

Problem isn't so much PC performance as storage space (tho shifting that much data too and from the GPU in real time is quite demanding).

A 1x1km flat terrain surface alone, textured at the pixel density of previous idtech3/4 titles would require 1.5gig of disc space (after DXT compression) detail that like they have in RAGE with rocks and other stuff and your looking at around 3+gig easy so for detailed game worlds they've had to push down the detail quite a bit to fit it in a reasonable size for distribution. I was wrong with the early numbers tho the texture lump with the retail game is only just over 11gig so they could probably up the detail in the more noticeable problem areas with only a 3-4gig patch and probably only need 20-30gigs for a fairly decent level of detail (AFAIK the original datafiles have around 4x the level of texture detail).

I'm not sure where but I thought I read that the original textures were 1TB.

Doubtless if we could have the full quality textures it would look better. Dammed if I know how we'd get them to our computers or access them fast enough to play the game though.

Uh right...

He has a point. Carmack used to be at the cutting edge of PC gaming...no he is realising this empty shell of a game that looks like:

rage_2011_10_11_19_39_28_479.png
- i'm not all about graphics, but that is seriously lazy work right there.

Yeah, a few badly textured objects and the use of sprites (which games don't use sprites anywhere exactly...?) are entirely the fault of the person that created the engine... Oh wait.. I love the way that people treat Carmack as if he was the only person working on Rage.

Sometimes I wonder if people get more fun out of going round tossing off to scenery than actually playing games. I think if people weren't so obsessed with going out of the way to look for the tiny flaws in the little corners, screen shotting it and QQ on a forum, they'd realize for the vast majority of the time, they game looks exceptionally good.

Whilst i agree with the sentiment it is just not realistic, many times when playing this game i have been enjoying it and then noticed something similar to the shots posted and it is jarring. I think it is far too invasive to ignore tbh.

Personally i think if any other studio released this game people would be tearing it to shreds! That they send you through a level and then an hour later ask you to go back through the same level backwards as part of the main quest would not go without considerable criticism with most games.

I am quite enjoying parts of it, but it is far too linear and repetitive to be considered anything other than average imo, and the poor textures only get in the way as well. (bear in mind that i had it preordered and was very much looking forward to it):)

Each to their own. I didn't mind some of the same-level-backwards parts, as you took a completely different path with new areas most of the time. Though once or twice the having to go back to just kill everyone was a bit annoying. Spending months of work spending time on an area and then only using it once for a single 30 minute sequence doesn't make any sense to me from a development point of view, why would you half the length of gameplay or double the length of dev time rather than this? It's not like they've gone OTT with the copy + paste (a la DA2), all of the areas are at least properly unique.

I had it pre-ordered too, and while it's slightly more linear than I'd have liked, I'd say it's never been a disappointment to me. Some people are just trying too hard to ignore it's good qualities imo.

Precisely. Ignore the graphics, if you can for a moment.

What does this game provide in terms of gaming experience over any other fps?
What does this engine provide in terms of mechanics that other engines do not?

So thats a no on anyone trying the MP then :p

There is the odd horribly low res item (that microscope for example) that grabs your attention but for the most part the environments look extremely good and are pretty damn unique.

Was given RAGE Anarchy Edition for my birthday and I have to say it's brilliant.

Fortunately I just had to use the latest drivers and off I went... no problems so far. This doesn't excuse the fact there are clearly issues that need to be addressed. id need to pull their finger out and sort this out once and for all.
Sure, it's not perfect... There are plenty of other games out there that offer a wider range of interesting quests, less linear paths to follow, a deeper story and better textures, detailed objects etc. But there are a lot of things RAGE does right and it ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of people.

Just enjoy it for what it is (for those of you who have got it working) and perhaps lower your expectations accordingly. And for those who are still having trouble, I hope you get to experience this great game soon. It really is worth it.

All my opinion of course. Not touting it as gospel truth :)

Alas, another Rage problem here, so sorry for posting, but i really cant seem to find a fix. I really want to play the game, no matter what crap has been said about it. It looks pretty good fun, which is what i reckon iD is about, not all about graphics and engines etc. (although that plays a big part). My problem is i seem to have tiling effects on the textures, kinda like the game is made out of big squares. I have attached (or will try to) a screenshot.
I have an AMD card, and was on Bf3 beta drivers. Upgraded to the 11.10 preview 2 drivers, and still have the problem. I have crossfired 5870s, i turned xfire off, removed one card, tried both of the cards, and yet it always is the same thing.
I also have updated my rage before i played it, so hoping that is not the issue.
I really hope someone could help me, cause i really want to play.
It is the retail eu copy, which installs to steam.

Anyway can i install it NOT on steam? i bought it retail, so i'd expect steam to bugger off
