!!**Official RAGE Thread**!!

everything seems very similar
It's difficult to see the differences in tech or gameplay demos of RAGE.

I'd take a look at the ~10 minute engine demo with Carmack in the OP. It explained it pretty well I think. :)

Which games do you think have everything uniquely painted?
Yeah i checked the engine demo vid, i hear what carmack is saying but still difficult to actually see what he's on about other than the game world has a higher level of detail, the editor looks great. RAGE looks similar to borderlands without the cell shading of course. So, to recap mega texture provides a greater level of detail within the virtual RAGE game world and that is wahat makes the id tech 5 engine unique?. I really can't tell the difference in the quality of the many videos.

(Generalising and simplifying a bit…) Most games have sets of textures that are repeated again and again throughout a level.

I haven't watched the video recently and I've not done any level editing for a long time, but I remember it showing how textures can be "painted" in the editor allowing for designers and level editors to get right in and give context to the whole landscape.

Taking borderlands as an example, I seem to remember that you get textures with clusters of newspapers discarded on the ground in towns. If you look around you'll likely find that same newspapers in a few places where the texture is repeated.

In IdTech5 the artist would decide exactly where he wants, arrange them how he wants, etc etc. All within the context of the level and without having to create a new one off texture and then load it in.

It probably doesnt seem like much to a lot of people, but from what I've seen the ability to make the little details far more interesting and contextual. If you're not so interested in the technical bits and would rather have "more realism" rather than "more detail" I can imagine it seeming a bit meh. I find it pretty interesting though. :)

*Disclaimer: could be talking gonads. This is just how I understand what I've seen. ;)

How does the pre order Anarchy Edition equipment work?

Are they already in the game when you install it? Do you have to download them?

Do you have to register your game to get them?

Are they available to your character from the beginning?

Yeah i like detail. Can't wait to try the editor. I presume RAGE is using the DirectX 9.0c render path?

There will probably be a code inside the retail DVD box which you would enter into the steam client to unlock to use in game. As for the digital version i presume you would just download all content in one go.

I was kind of trying to answer Kedge's question about the editor's render path being DX9, I assumed it wouldn't be if it was OpenGL. :)

Stumbled across this, done some reading and looks highly interesting, very Borderlands looking if you know what i mean and i loved that, Now the only question is do i risk a pre-order, as you never know it could be a flop.

Really can't see this being a flop, would be the first I.D. game that I've played that was if that turned out to be true.

Go for it. The game looks awesome and there will be tons of modding. It should be great :)

I agree. I've seen nothing that puts me off in the slightest so far. :)

Even if the game turns out to be average though, the mod tools they're providing out of the box look superb.

Shop around though, Steam isn't the best price by a long way, and it's Steamworks. :)

Ive found both versions for about £25, has anyone found it any cheaper?

I haven't looked recently but that seems pretty reasonable.

Not sure if it's still available, but the collectors edition was the same price as the Steam version on the Game website. Its quite meager, a couple of comics and a making of DVD I think. Looking forward to the DVD lots though. Potentially very interesting. :)
