*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

Is there any space combat in this game, like X-wing vs Tie-fighter?

Yes there is space combat, but no, not like xwing v tiefighter. From what I've seen its 3rd person view, 2 dimensions and on rails , as opposed to the 1st person , full 3 dimension free flight of xwing v tiefighter. So yes and no :)

Yea.. I think from what they've been saying the space combat is something you can just do when you feel like, you don't have to do it its just something to do if you're waiting for friends to come online. Whilst I'd have preferred an XvT style thing I doubt that was ever a realistic hope for them to make on top of everything else they must have to do.

A nice video from PAX with very good quality, the game is looking better and better every day.

What was that a video of? Was that an instanced quest? Are all quests instanced? I'm assuming those other players in the video were grouped with him rather than wanderers running by.

Or was it a "dungeon" , for want of a better word.

It is Taral V which is a "Flashpoint" (Bioware's posh name for a Dungeon)

I think most quests are in the open world but this one seems very instanced and yes those people were grouped up when they did the "Flashpoint".

Ah excellent, thanks, thought it might be a dungeon but wasnt sure.

Still not sure if want.

I'll just be comparing it with galaxies the whole time, and from what I've seen so far it won't stack up. 8 Classes? Seriously? And not a single one of them I want to play :(. It looks like its just going to be instance mayhem, and I still hate the graphical style.

When is release pencilled in for and is there a beta test going on/coming up. More i see the more I like. Can still imagine the community will balls it up like most other mmo communities :(

Everyone at BioWare and EA is working to ensure that Star Wars: The Old Republic is delivered at the quality level you expect from BioWare and Star Wars.

‪Star Wars: The Old Republic is expected to launch this year after the close of EA's fiscal 2011 (which ends March 31st, 2011). Information on the release date and pre-order programs will be released as it becomes available.

Hurry up please!

I think September-ish will be about right, from the sounds of it they are putting the finishing touches to the development and will then spend a good amount of time testing the game.

I would expect an Open beta(If we get one, which if we don't I might not buy) around July-August time with a release in September.

Hopefully I will be able to get some cash together and get myself a new PC so I can finally stop playing MMO's with almost all of the settings on low.

The game will be released this year that much is certain, Originally bioware had said that they were planning for a spring 2011 release (they have not said this still isn't the case), At an EA investor's conference a month or two ago the game was confirmed as being after the fiscal year 2011 but during calendar year 2011(so from April 1st to December 31st release window).

And as obviously a lot of people do not know, This game has been in testing stage since last July, This is when people started getting invited to test from having signed up on the site, The testing groups themselves have been relatively small and focused on specific content and not the game as a whole.

You can see that testing has been going on for a long while by looking at any of the video's from this weekend's PAX east, It has been commented many times on just how high the level of polish is on the content that was shown at PAX.

If any open or larger scale invite beta is going to happen it will probably be only for stress testing and may not last more than a month at most.

A release sooner in the year (spring or early summer) would be better for bioware as they would have to compete with some massive AAA titles later in the year like their own Mass Effect 3 or Guild Wars 2, Gears of War 3, RAGE, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Deus Ex, Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3 etc.

Well most of those games are different Genres, you don't have to worry too much about games coming out at a similar time if they are not going to attract the same audience as your game.

Plus I doubt Guild Wars 2 is going to be ready for release this year so the only MMO they really need to worry about this year would be TERA.

I'm going to go on record right now and state that not having a significant public beta phase will be a mistake. Just having stress testing externally will not iron out all the issues I mentioned earlier, it takes large numbers of public testers to deal with those. I can only assume that the supposed testing thats going on is only at the friends and family stage because if there was any significant public testing going on at the moment there would be some video leaks somewhere. Every single MMO I have ever known has had leaks from a tester and I see no reason why SWTOR would be any different.

Myself, I would be hugely surprised (and somewhat concerned for the state of the game) if it releases in spring or early summer. I personally think that a winter/late 2011 release is more likely and I even think that yes it might slip to Q1 2011, dates slip so often in MMOs. As mentioned above, AAA titles or not MMOs generally do not worry about non-MMO releases and to be honest if they really want to be the next big MMO then they shouldnt be worried about Guild Wars 2, they should think they will be bigger than it anyway (not that I think its coming this year either).

Its been widely accepted and proven that generally speaking an MMO title is made or broken by its initial first months, very rarely does an MMO ever recover if its initial months are bad. If I was the investors and had the choice of pushing it out the door in summer and having a higher chance of dodgy initial months or waiting til winter and nailing the game down some more and reducing the chance of dodgy initial months, I will choose the winter release every time.

However, thats all conjecture and we will just have to wait and see what happens. Ultimately, as long as the quests are decent, there is plenty of large scale open world areas to explore, plenty of opportunities to bump into other players both in PvE and PvP, decent active world PvP then I'll be happy :)
