*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

and yet people have posted here and on the swtor forums saying they've tested when they are not connected to EA/Bioware, there was that whole thing on the Swtor forums back in november/december about normal people on the official forums receiving beta invites and asking if the email was for real (it was).

I've beta tested sw:tor, there see how easy that is on a forum :) ( I rarely believe more than about 25% of what people claim on the internet)

What they probably mean is that it is equal to friends and family in terms of the number of testers, hence them needing to have much more significant public beta phases. Which was my original point, that there needs to be a thorough and significant (think I used that word several times in the thread) public beta phases as every mmo that I have played which went live with very limited public testing has been a car crash at release.

As I have said before, all we can do is wait and see when it releases (i still think it will be after September, only time will show whether I am right or not) and what condition it is in when it releases. I am keeping very firmly grounded because I am oh so tired of hearing that the next mmo X is going to be so awesome and it then turns out very average and 3 weeks after its released no bugger is left here playing it. So I am keeping low to the ground and not getting marketed by the hype. Safest way :)

(although admittedly if a UO2 or Daoc 2 was announced I fear I would explode with hype and joy :D )

What I meant was its not just 'friends and family' so there is some testing going on outside of the EA/Bioware circle, if you mean in terms of large scale testing then sure that has to happen and will likely happen closer to release.

Hopefully not too close to release, imo an MMO needs a good solid 6 months of substantial public testing in order to cover all the bases of pve and pvp.

Have they said what the hour will consist of?

Is it an hours play from level 1, or an hours play of a max level character, an hour of anywhere play or an hour of play in an instance, or what?

Its the origin worlds you get to play, you have the choice of playing any origin world you want too for any class.

Ah right, so its going to sort of be level 1-5 or such, thats a pity. I'm guessing no chance of seeing how the PvP works out then?

Probably not, I would imagine PvP is something they would avoid letting people play before release as it can be the most problematic area and one of the ones that comes with a hard core following. Issues like balance etc always take time to even out.

Darn, ok...I'll have to wait til after release and some pvp feedback before deciding whether to get it or not then. Or at least until some kind of open beta where I can try the pvp.

Bit Tech made a preview of SWTOR today, they really did not like it :( Hope it's not as bad as they are making it out to be.

Our opinion of The Old Republic, formed over two solid days of playing, is that it’s one of the most boring titles we’ve ever had to endure. It’s plain and staid and deathly dull. It’s both exactly the same as every other MMO we've played, but at the same time so much worse because it promises so much more.

Seems to me BT don't like MMO's or get how they work. Their opinion also seems at odds with all other reviews I've read. I'll wait and form my own opinion when it launches...

As with all mmos, that's the best way, to try it for yourself and form your own opinion.

Exactly!

But some people live and breathe on the words of others, oddly.. unable to just form their own opinions first. I have a friend who keeps linking me to these articles and starts worrying as if it's the end of the world.

No matter how often I show him reason and to make his own mind up, he resorts to believing the negative rather than positive.

That's what I was half expecting to hear sooner rather than later. It's obviously just one mans opinion but it chimes with my fear of what will come. Wow with lightsabers as a mate of mine put it.

Do more games need to take the plunge and go the eve-esque route of player developed story? Put a very basic frame in place but then let people make their own world through others actions. It has it's obvious drawbacks but eventually dev's will have to realise that a procession of wow clones tweaked slightly doesn't beat wow!

I think I will follow Tombstones lead and hold off buying for a good few month after launch to see how things fall, ultimately though I will makeup my own mind.
