*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

Tombstone, I think the emphasis is "other" :) So far Bioware have a very good reputation for quality... Oh and one thing with an MMO they only get some of your money and more only if they deliver. There have been enough MMO's fall by the wayside to show them what can happen, plus old Beardy is looking over their shoulder keeping them on track. On second thoughts he can get it wrong sometimes!

Lets hope then that the reputation for quality in a genre applies to the MMO genre too, they wouldnt be the first dev house to find that running an MMO is a very different kettle of fish compared to creating a single player game and releasing it to the shelves and not having to do anything else with it apart from an expansion a year later, or that the expectations of the playerbase who paid £30 once for a game is different to the expectations of a playerbase who paid that and will then be paying monthly on top. I hope they can pull it off because as you rightly say they have a great reputation and it would be a shame for that reputation to be tarnished if things all go wrong.

I think both our hopes may be answered as they have also stated that they are aware that holding payers attention is important and regular new content is planned rather than the once a year expansions. If you haven't already check our Darthhater.com some good info there and a lot easier than trawling through all the rubbish on the official forums :)

I see that ME3 has been delayed until Q1 2012 so maybe they want to concentrate on SWTOR? My theory is an autumn release to coincide with the Star Wars blu-ray release and obviously the start of the bad weather and more time for MMO's, at least in the northern hemisphere!

...plus old Beardy is looking over their shoulder keeping them on track....

Much like yourself, this bit scares me the most. I suspect Lucas lost all sense of reality soon after AotC came out and scored over a Billion dollars despite being shi.....not very good.

With this and Battlefield 3 coming I'm not going to leave the house for months.

Just read it at the top, it couldn't be any more obvious he dodged the question because there will be NO world pvp or anything like that.
Dunno about that, his description of PvE and PvP servers and then saying the PvE servers will have specific PvP zones, or you can flag yourself for PvP makes it sound exactly like WoW in that on PvP servers you are flagged for PvP all the time.

But theres a big difference between being flagged for PvP and promoting world PvP objectives and making people go out there to fight.

In WoW when I levelled on a PvP server I think I got into world PvP about half a dozen, maybe ten times whilst levelling to 85. Then it stops completely because everyone just flies around and avoids each other.

Flagging for pvp sounds just like SWG to me and the open world pvp was great fun. Raids on Anchorhead were great :) Seems to me Bioware do have a clue and are aiming to make a really enjoyable game. Can't wait myself :)

Latest news seems to relate to another possible delay with release. I could fall into 2012.

EA have not slated it for release in their schedule for this year as yet, but they say it could still be released but they are trying to make sure they get good data back from the beta testing to improve things.

SWTOR Launch window announced

It isn't going to be 2012 that is a reference to the financial year...

EA's financial results report was released to the public today, and alongside the various bits of fiscal information is one important tidbit for fans of Star Wars: The Old Republic. On page 17 of the document, we find "The Packaged Goods title release schedule excludes Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is expected to launch in either Q2 FY12 or Q3 FY12," where Q2 FY12 and Q3 FY12 correspond to July through September and October through December, respectively, of this year.

The EA Investor conference call last night:
EA Bod said:
So, our guidance range at the high end of 90 cents. We give it a ship date range of fiscal Q2 to fiscal Q3 for Star Wars, and so Star Wars shipping earlier, ie Q2 vs. Q3 is factored into the 90 cent upper range. We are not giving any specidifc subscription or subscriber targets or ARPU. The only thing we've said about business models is that it's expected to be a monthly subscription based, but beyond that we haven't given any specific metrics for that. . . . if the ship date should slip by a couple months from Q2 into the latter portion of Q3, it's north of 5 cents, 10 centes in terms of variability based on the ship date of Star Wars.

They also said this:

These forward-looking statements are valid as of May 4, 2011 only. The Packaged Goods title release schedule excludes Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is expected to launch in either Q2 FY12 or Q3 FY12.

The official website was updated to say:
SWTOR.com said:
Star Wars: The Old Republic is expected to launch in the second half of 2011. Information on the release date and pre-order programs will be released as it becomes available.

You might want to check your sources. :o

EA has admitted that Star Wars: The Old Republic could suffer yet another delay that may push it beyond the 2011 release previously promised.

The game has been omitted from the firm's release schedule, and while it says it "fully anticipates" launching the game later this calendar year, it admits there's an "outside possibility of a January launch".

Speaking more on the matter, EA Games Label boss man Frank Gibeau said: "We're holding the date for two reasons - first, we don't want to tip off the competition; second, we want more data from the beta test to guarantee a spectacular experience at launch."

The publisher previously suggested the online game would release in Spring 2011. That was changed to 'calendar 2011' in February, shortly after unconfirmed reports claimed the game was being lined up for September.

It will probably land this year, but whenever they mention "there's a possibility" you always wonder if that "possibility" will become "reality"

aslong as they dont go the wow route and add silly battlegrounds as they completely killed world pvp in wow... even on the pvp servers

I really pity people who think the ability to flag yourself for pvp is a world pvp system, you just dont know what you are missing. They have confirmed that there will be battlegrounds havnt they? All yhe people comparing it to swg are going to be dissapointed!!!!!!

I agree but maybe they are not ready to release open world pvp information yet, although I suspect it will be just like any other MMO.

Also about leveling on a pvp server in wow, I agree now that there's flying mounts(and earlier ground mounts) and battlegrounds it's been shot to hell, playing when it was released was really fun, after you got out of the starter zones it became awesome. Tarren Mill/Southshore was one of the early areas where the two opposing sides would quest (deathknell was a little too sparse).

But that happens to so many other mmos later in their lives, it's a shame; players find their own hotspots for pvp action, I welcome the next MMO that's decent and has world only pvp. Anarchy Online for example, players knew where to go for action, driven by players. Not carrot on a stick battlegrounds, that was until they introduced battle..."stations". Gone are the days of PVPing for just the fun of it, now people need a reason, a reward and gear to get, with stats that are exclusive to pvp.

But we already know swtor has warfronts or whatever they're calling it, so it's pretty obvious how it's going to go down, they need to reward world pvp as well, promote it, etc.

.

I used to love them days. Once was involved in a 3 hour long battle in Hillsbard Foothills, we would roll them back to Tarren Mill be on the verge of victory then the guards would get involved and we would slowly get slapped back to Southshore where our guards would get involved and then vice versa. The bridge over the river in the middle was just bodies everywhere :D

I only died the whole battle once and that was in the last couple of minutes some damn rogue suicide ganked me in the middle of our group and took me out whilst I was trying to heal. Was so gutted I could have lasted the whole thing with no deaths :( :)

Good memories

Yeah...I reckon when they say "outside chance" really that translates to being almost certainly delayed...

I wouldn't say so as Mass Effect 3 has been delayed until Q1 and I don't see them releasing both games in the same quarter. I still hold by the autumn release, gives 6 months of bad weather/Christmas time to generate a large customer base.

Edit: While free for all PVP has its place on a few servers it can be a real pain in the backside being ganked by muppet 12yr olds when you're just doing a bit of casual leveling. It can be fun pvping in the open world but it's a lot more fun when you're in the mood for it, if it works like SWG I'll be quite happy. Make some hardcore pvp servers for those that want it and we're all happy :)
