*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

Yeah that's definitely the path I will take, this is a title which generates enormous hype, hype which is only going to get bigger and bigger, by the time of release there will be so much fauning over it that its going to be very difficult to get any real sense anywhere. So i'll wait until the game has been out for at least 3 months and I am able to open a web browser without getting it shoved in my face and then I will check it out.

I've always liked player content in mmos , but sadly it all too often fails due to the players themselves who have been spoon fed for so long now that they lack the creativity or imagination to come up with stuff of their own and will instead cry lack of content to every forum which gives them voice.

that's the downside to the idea. I have found eve a refreshing change but even for someone lie myself who wants/enjoys the system I will struggle to stick with it long term for two reasons. It takes a big time investment to get involved in signifigant events or get better "gear" which players these days expect instantly. Also i have found it true of dve that it is 99% waiting for that 1% of amazing which hooks you, again modern players expect instant gratification. This effects me because I don't play often these days and i want something to happen in my limited playtime. Good game all the same.

Anyhoo on topic I doubt BW would be a good developer for player driven story as they pride themselves on the strength of their stories.

They are bound to annouce information on PVP before release, infact I remember there being a dev post a couple of weeks back saying there'd be info released soon.

Aye, press/fansite embargo on their recent PVP play sessions drops this week, May 4th iirc. Should get some good PVP info then.

As for the BT preview, it's inevitable some places will come out with stuff like that, I guess these games are not for everyone and they're entitled to their opinion just like everyone else. As Troezar has said though, it certainly seems at odds with the rest of the info explosion that occurred this week, let alone my own experiences in a thoroughly enjoyable beta test (and that was months ago).

When ever I see any of those videos of in game play, is it just me or does anyone else actually want to see dismemberment? When you attack a robot with a lightsaber, the final killing stroke at least should slice the robot in two? I can understand them not wanting a high rating for having too much violence and having actual player character beheadings, but against robots and droids i'd expect to see parts falling off?

Yeah but they could have at least done it for robots.
Considering what a light saber can cut through and how easily, it's one game you would expect it.

But I have a feeling that excuse was a tactical one, rather than saying "It's a lot of work animating dismemberment for all models a lightsaber wielding user will attack". After all, swimming is too much.

But no swimming? WTF?
I hope the engine is decent (for once in an mmo) so it's actually built to run smoothly. AND LOOK GOOD.

Decent engines from my experience:

-Lord Of The Rings Online.
-World of Warcraft.
-Champions Online.
-City of Heroes.

Rubbish engines from my experience:

-Star Wars Galaxies.

I confess I haven't read every single preview out there, but from the the few (recent ones) I have seen I got the impression that TOR is shaping up to be more like a single player game with persistent coop and instanced pvp rather than a true MMO.

It's as if Bioware decided to develop KOTOR 3 with a full 8 story lines and realised that the only way this could be commercially viable is if they released the game as MMO with a subscription pricing model.

I wouldn't even mind that of itself. I didn't like DA:O and DA2, but I did enjoy some of Bioware's earlier efforts (notably KOTOR 1) so I will probably give it a go. It's perhaps just a missed opportunity to do something a little more interesting/progressive with the MMO genre.

I'm getting this feel too and pretty sure i won't be getting it now =/

This is what myself and a lot of people have been saying from the day it was released and the vast majority of gamers who still feel neglected by LA [not SOE, as LA were the ones who gave the go ahead for NGE] for the NGE, need to relealise this isn't and never will be Pre-CU.

I see lots of guestimates here about parts of the game that Bioware hasn't yet released. Nothing much about open world play other than it will be in the game.

No idea why people are so impatient, I've been following this for 18+ months and I'd rather wait and have a good game. I can just hear the whines if it was released early full of bugs!

Oh and as an ex SWG player who played up until JTL, this is not SWG it will never be and isn't trying to be. My personal feeling are it could be better. Bioware aren't operating in a bubble they are all too aware of the issues other games have had and have stated they are working to avoid these. Check out the amount of data they are currently collecting on the test gameplay and modifying the game accordingly. Not really the actions of a company that "don't care", a good game = more money for them...

To be fair, in my experience, whether an MMO releases early or late, its got bugs :)

Again to be fair, in my experience, almost all recent MMOs say they are aware of the issues other games have had and they are working to avoid them. Almost all other MMOs also have had a more "caring" appearance Pre-release (while they are trying to build up interest) than they have then shown post-release (once they have already got your money).

Now, I am not saying that they will be the same, just pointing out that its things which have already been said and done time and again by other MMOs Pre-release. Kind of taints you after awhile :)

Looks like European testing is going to ramp up pretty soon. I just recieved an email stating the below.

Prepare for European game testing!

Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ will soon begin a new round of game testing in Europe.

Tombstone, I think the emphasis is "other" :) So far Bioware have a very good reputation for quality... Oh and one thing with an MMO they only get some of your money and more only if they deliver. There have been enough MMO's fall by the wayside to show them what can happen, plus old Beardy is looking over their shoulder keeping them on track. On second thoughts he can get it wrong sometimes!
