*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

Now theres a refreshingly new and unexpected sentence about an upcoming MMO release. :D

Lol well I thought as well worn statements were flying around this thread I'd join in;) That said, I've been following this game for a long time and have passed up on a lot of others as they didn't show anything like the promise.

I think the difference this time is you have Bioware not SOE teaming up with Lucasarts. I also remember the days before WoW which a lot of people don't. Early SWG (pre space combat) was excellent and messed up when Holocrons were introduced.

People should also remember how much MMO's change over time so even if it isn't prefect in pre-beta there's plenty of scope to tweak things including PVP. I'm predicting servers offering more or less pvp as WoW does. Competitors have an advantage in that they can copy what WoW does well and leave out the grind!

Yes but early SWG had open world PvP if people flagged themselves for it, which was awesome. TOR will follow the new, worse, format of just battlegrounds.

Open World PvP = YAY !!! (for me)
Instanced PvP = Yawn !!! (for me)

:D

Though admittedly that point of view is increasingly becoming less and less common.

I'll happily have a bit of both. I think it's our safety culture turning swathes of the population into carebears:D That said a total free for all can ruin a game too. I'd like early SWG pvp with additional battlegrounds for more organised pvp....

I dont mind battlegrounds too much, but I always wish they were like Daoc BGs, where the BG was persistant and people came and went from it and everyone was in the 1 BG so there was no limit to the numbers you could have in it, rather than this modern trend for "time" limited, player limited instanced BGs. Daocs BGs were so much better than other games BGs...wish more devs would do BGs like that. (though better still for me would be no BGs and open world pvp, be it factional or free for all)

(I also wish of course that we would move away from this instanced missions/dungeons thing and back to the open shared dungeons like we had in UO)

The whole fun of MMO's is that you can wander the lands if you want and find people to kill, if they remove this feature I won't call it an MMO really, more of a MORPG.

Open world PVP is why I really loved the idea of Ultima even though I never tried it but i'm not too bothered now Darkfall Online is out.

I seriously hope it isn't going to be just battlegrounds.

From what I have read in your past posts you would have truly adored UO. A pity that you never had the opportunity to experience its brilliance at its prime. You'd had loved it.

I know where people are coming from about open world pvp but there needs to be some controls. Griefers and general idiots can soon ruin a game especially if there is more to the game than just pvp. There are plenty of reasons the restrictions in current titles exist, camping, farming kill stealing etc. etc. they've just gone too far.

Eve has a reasonable system with carebear heaven for those that want it and unrestricted areas available for all that want it. The key is travel between is unrestricted and you can still kill anywhere but there are harsh penalties if you do that in the "safer" areas :)

Unfortunately when all is said and done most people seem to want to do their own thing without interference (death!) and they are the ones paying most of the bill. Fingers crossed Bioware et al get it right....

SWG obviously had it's pitfalls, but I really liked the system of being covert/overt, which allowed for open world PVP without the problem of people who didn't want to fight being caught up in it.

I am hopeful they will think about something like this for SW:TOR. Fights breaking out anywhere is how it should be, that's what would happen. Not particularly 'heroic' or realistic if someone confronts you and you have to say 'not here, let's head over to that field' is it!

I miss the naked wookiee corvette runs in SWG.

SWG system was perfect for PvP, for me anyway. If you wanted to grind you could, if you wanted to grind faction there was risk involved and nothing beat being in a spaceport and then suddenly getting slammed by a BH with your mission. SWG was the last time I had excitement in PvP, never knowing if the guy next to you was about to KD/Dizzy eyeshot - eyeshot - eyeshot. 20 man group TEF's.

I really hope that SW:TOR takes something from SWG's PvP.

That would be nice, sadly though I get the impression that they are going to largely avoid the pvp side of things and just throw in half a dozen instanced team-based wow style battlegrounds.

I do hope you're wrong, would really take the shine of it for me. Especially as I've been bigging it up! :)

Agreed. Dare i say it this game is starting to reek of Trammel / Carebear land already which to be fair is to be expected since the average WoW kiddie wants to play with zero risk and maximum reward.

It is kind of weird the way that MMOs keep picking IPs that are built around war and conflict , then do everything they can to avoid having war and conflict.

most people would be happy with some form of borderlands or badlands for pvp where mobs give more exp and drop more loot/better loot to encourage people to go there.

unlike WAR's crap empty pvp zones that only exist for pvp but they are usually empty

It isn't really anything to do with "WoW kiddies" and zero risk. As I get older and have more demands on my time then an open world full PvP MMO is less and less appealing. When your ability to win a fight has little to do with ability and everything to do with time/gear/levels/skills then it isn't really all that fun. Unrestricted PvP always ends up one way, the fun being on one side of the fight only. The same attitude that makes a L60 go around trying to duel L20 players is just too prevelant amongst the pvp kiddies.
