*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

Ive played this twice :( since last thursday.

Not feeling the MMO love anymore 5 + years of wow and its just the same old stuff.

Im a massive star wars fan but the game just doesn't have me wanting to play it. i will play it if there is nout else to do but id rather play some LA noir or Fifa 11.

Such a shame i was so excited about this.

its not a reflection on the quality of the game i guess im just burnt out and bored of the genre.

Maybe that will change.

Well if your not liking it, i would really like to give you some money for that lovely key of yours ;)

I hope they do release something like this, I did like this feature blizzard implemented.

Yeah, I think an authenticator will be a must for them to sort out, Rift released without one and had an absolute swathe of people getting their accounts stolen, and that was a game which hardly carried any hype at the time. SWToR is riding the crest of probably the largest MMO hype wave ever, if people so heavily targetted Rift in the manner they did, you can bet that they will target SWToR players like crazy.

rift had a massive whole in their security system, the vast (vast) majority of MMOs don't have an authenticator and get along fine.

Or we could take the account off you :P.
Could you give us some screenies maybe or some vids?

I would say thats possibly because only certain MMOs are profitable enough to warrant them taking the time to get hold of accounts. For example, theres a big profit market in WoW virtual items, there isnt a big profit market in Age of Conan virtual items. Given that SWToR is going to be huge, its almost certainly going to be seen as a very profitable market. Its about supply and demand, the more popular an MMO is the more likely it is to have accounts stolen or gold farming for example. Its a hugely profitable industry, the selling of virtual items, with each passing year more and more accounts get taken in various MMOs. People are still having their accounts hacked in WoW, now if Blizzard after several years still cant stop it, whats to think that a brand new MMO by Devs new to the genre and the dealings of pay monthly arent going to also encounter it? Put it this way, its almost certain that people will try and get SWToR accounts, so what harm is there is putting in an extra layer of security and releasing an authenticator for it? None as far as I can see. If offered one, I'd certainly use it. Already do in the MMOs I currently play.

Copypasting some impressions from the MMO-Champion forums:

-Overall general impressions are amazing. It truly is one of favorite games ever already.

-The leveling quality and quest design are so far above any game that I have ever played that it's comical. The ending quests of certain planets are just plain epic win.

-The ships are pretty damned big. Everything is built to scale in the game. You don't walk into a hut and magically see many layers and huge rooms.

-Companions are absolutely wonderful. The only ****ty part is that you can't talk to them whenever you want. They talk to you when they are scripted to do so at certain places on the map, in your ship, or as the game progresses. I really wih I could talk to them more often.

-The class stories are all very VERY engaging IMO. The weakest one I tried was the Inquisitor, although it was not bad by any means at all. I just personally liked some others better.

-I've tried:

~Imperial Agent (dps) to level 16. Cover took some time to get used to, but then was easy to do. Great damage and kicked ass in PvP. (You just have to play it correctly)

~Sith Warrior Marauder (dps) to level 17. Was fun wrecking things.

~Juggernaut (tank) to level 17. Was fun to tank and PvP with. I dealt good damage and soaked a lot as well. Threat never seemed to be a problem if I was paying attention.

~Sith Inquisitor Sorcerer (healer/lightning) to level 18. Was a lot of fun both with lightning and healing. Healing is not as "advanced" as it is in WoW. The reason is because WoW healer can do nothing else except heal. TOR's can still dps well. It feels better IMO.

~Bounty Hunter Mercenary (dps) to level 22. Was a lot of fun running around with 2 pistols.

~Bounty Hunter Powertech (tank) to level 29. Was a lot of fun. I didn't feel like a tank until level 20, though after that was awesome. PvP is great as a tank. I like seeing big numbers in the sheilded colunn after a warzone.

~Trooper to level 6. Not enough time, but was fun.
It's hard finding time to play all I want to. lol

-I had fun healing. I could dps as well with everything other than boss fights.

-I had a lot of fun tanking. A LOT. Especially in PvP. It is really awesome.

-Leveling as a tank or healer is great. I doesn't feel slower at all. The companions compliment you nicely, and you are not a weak little pud.

-Animations don't evolve with levels, but you do get new skills as you level that have new animations. nothing is done twice with a simple flash added to it. Everything is unique.

-There are a ton of choices you need to make that are unclear (regardless of it telling you you get LS/DS points for it) as to what the outcome will be. The choices without LS/DS point gains are also tough. I do litterally sit there pondering my choices at times.

-The voice acting is fantastic for the most part. Some people have super annoying voices and make me want to punch babies, but that's kind of the point sometimes. lol. I have no complaints at all except for when it bugs. :/

-I personally have never enjoyed space shooter games. I've had fun with some, and Star Fox is the only one I can actually remember liking. That said, I won't be playing the Space Combat mini-game. It's not bad for what it is, but it's not something I enjoy either. Though I will say, i am also a staunch supporter of Bioware NEVER adding more space flying elements into the game. I just hate that kind of game. Their main game is too amazing for me to waste time playing with a space ship.

-I only played a little bit of Trooper, so no. No companions by that point for me.

-Force users do not feel special to me at all. Bioware went to great lengths to make non force users really super badass. And that's not to say force users are not, cause they are. Story is amazing for all. Power is actually really well balanced. They are tweaking between builds, and certain classes (Cough Commando especially, and Sage/Sorcerer a bit cough) are OP atm, but they were not last build. So, this is just tweaking on Bioware's part to try a few things. But, overall it really feels super balanced.

-Animations and graphics are the best I've ever seen in an MMO.

-Combat is sweet. You engage a group of 3 mobs, and one rushes at you, 2 others seperate and take cover. It adds challenges I have never seen in an MMO before. You really do feel like an
epic ass kicker.

-The fun factor is really the biggest thing. I've never had as much fun with another MMO as I have with my time with this game. I'm really excited to see endgame.

-Huttball is absolutey awesome IF other players know what they are doing. Otherwise it can be a little annoying. lol "Just pass the ****ing ball!!!" "No, run to THEIR goal line, not ours!!!"

-Alderaan's warzone is awesome. I never really cared for Arathi Basin in WoW, but I really like this one.

-The Voidstar is hit or miss. It's a take turns to get through the objective scenario. Usually one team just dominates the other.

-I've never been, nor ever seen anyone get stunlocked. The resolve bar helps in that respect. Though, if 3 or 4 people are all attacking you, they can kill you and keep you stunned. But that's common sense.

-You will rarely win a 2v1 scenario. But you can be smart about it and live a long time, killing one in the process.

-This game is far better than anything you've seen on it yet. Playing it makes all the difference.

Promising quote again, but if there was one thing I would wish for its that people would start with a quick run down of their mmo history. Without some idea of their mmo history sentences like "its the best/worst graphics I've ever seen in an mmo" and "its the best fun I've ever had in an mmo" kind of lose their measuring stick as for all the reader knows the only mmo the writer has ever played is runescape. A good write-up imo should start with a quick few lines about where the writers standpoint is coming from, it helps to clarify the coming paragraphs for the reader and enables them to get a stronger sense of what the writers comparisons are with.

I really haven't kept much in the way of footage or screenshots. I have a couple of examples of the poor textures, but figure it is still very early. Some things in the game look really great though.

I must say though, the character faces are really, really good - the eyes in particular.
