** Official Thread for those attending the 2011 British Grand Prix at Silverstone **

I've done Spa twice, and doing it a 3rd time this year. So have a few others on here. Definitely worth going to. 24x 18,000rpm F1 cars screaming through the trees is one of the greatest sounds known to man.

A few of the lads at work are planning a driver-over this year, tempted i must admit.

That sounds so good :) Just looking at prices and accommodation etc. at the moment. Think I'd go for GA tickets whole weekend, ferry trip over there with car - apparantly the roads around the circuit are fantastic for driving around... the only thing I'm deciding on is accommodation. I think it might have to be camping as I'd imagine all the hotels in the close vicinity are booked up.

I'll have a go at answering all the questions in one go..

CS Nuts - You have no excuse, get it done! You been before? If not, what are you doing man!

smr - You only need GA for Spa as 90% of the track is just grass banking. You cannot get to the areas between the final corner and the start of Eau Rouge without a grandstand ticket, but everywhere else is open. Decent views of Eau Rouge are possible, but difficult with GA. The roads around the track are indeed great fun. Its also only about 70 miles from the Nurburgring. Went a few years back and watched a camo'ed up Panamera testing, and a Ranger Rover sport where you couldn't hear the engine over the tyre squeel! Camping at the track is not recomended unless you are a fan of Finish Thrash Metal till 6am... I'm doing Camping F1 this year, which is a managed (they put up the tent for you!) site a few miles from the track so should be good. I have also stayed in the Formule1 hotel (basically a cheap Travelodge type place) in Leige, which is only about a 30 minute drive away.

Taken - GA tickets for the weekend will cost around £150. Then we are taking the Channel Tunnel at £120, although we could have got a Ferry for well under £100. Its about 400 miles from Calais to Spa so there is the fuel cost for that. Camping F1 is costing us £520 for 4 people for 4 nights in 2 tents. Camping at the track is cheaper, but I wouldn't recomend it, and the Formule1 place was about £30 a night. Its not cheap, but for the group of 4 of us going, including tickets, its been about £400 each to book, then we will just add fuel and food costs.

Thanks for the info Skeeter...

One or two more questions - the ferry price I found for £165 is from Ramsgate to Ostend return.... so 2 and a half hours driving from Ostend to Spa... is that a decent return ferry price?

Pretty sure I'll be buying GA tickets.

The only thing I'm wondering about is where to stay - we definitely don't want to camp at the track if that's the case, and I'm just reading some reviews on f1fanatic confirming what you're saying about the ongoing party music throughout the night.

That CampingF1 is something I'm looking at as well, either that or the "Elephant" campsite - do you know about that site?

The timetables on Silverstone and F1 websites are GMT.

Were not on GMT at the moment.

:)

Thank god for that :)
I must admit I thought 9am was a bit early too but as it was from the Silvy site I thought it was correct, or at least it should be!! It would be nicer at 10! Certainly the rush to get there won't be so bad.

Looks like the friday times are off by an hour but sat/sun are correct.

Thanks cool picture, getting giddy now i can see the grandstand on new pit straights where my sunday grandstand seat is :D

np, thought it was handy.

Just looking at it actually, it seems the grandstand opposite Luffield is now gone? So should get good view of the cars from the Arena straight.

I wish prices for Silverstone were cheaper.

3 of us had weekend tickets for the Indy F1 race a while back equal to the cost of a single Silverstone pass, crazy!

thats cheep mate. ;)

f1 this year for me and my father. 3 day ticket, platinum grandstand on the pitstraight :)

our view.

just emagine the f1 cars threw there, its going to be incredable.

smr - I think £165 for a ferry is fine, especially if you have 4 of you in the car to split the cost. The Spa track campsites are just fields with porta-loos and no showers. When I stayed in one we were in a motorhome (as were most other people), which made it bearable, but in a tent it would be a nightmare. Taggart on here stayed in CampingF1 a couple of years back and though it was good, so were staying there this year. Not heard about that Elephant place. I would also recomend the Formule1 hotel in Leige if you want a quieter night. Its on and industrial estate so theres nothing to do, but we just turned up, slept, got up, went again when we stayed there. Oh, and one other thing, if you are driving make sure you remember to book carparking with your tickets, otherwise you will be hit with a second FedEx delivery charge for your parking passes as we were (Its about £30 delivery!)

Kerming - I used to sit almost in that exact sport with my GA tickets, and you could see more as there were no buildings in the way. Personally, I have never had any interest in sitting on the pit straight. I have sat in every grandstand at Silverstone and the (old) pit one was one of the worst. Make sure you sit elsewhere Friday and Saturday as your ticket is a roaming Grandstand one on those days.

going on the friday again this year, can't afford the 3 day grandstand tickets. We sat at becketts for FP1 and woodcote for FP2 both great places. Think we might try Abbey and the Village this year
