This is the most annoying game on earth, stats seem to do nigh on nothing, opponents go randomly from unbeatable to crap. Risk shots/serves are utterly impossible aiming spots are random and even worse i cannot beat a single person on live which is doing my head in.

Did you have the original Top Spin at all? I did, and as a result never found Top Spin 2 very hard (as I said before, I've only ever lost one match).

The secret to winning is adapting to your opponent and how they play, not letting them play their game by making sure you impose yours. Some general tips on how to do this.....

  • Learn to read their serves. Some players (like Roddick) are just big power servers, these are easy to play against, just return it easily. Some other players (like Federer) like the chopping serves that send you well wide. Returning these often has you out of position giving them an easy point. Counter this by moving early to return the serve, and slice return it to the middle of the court (not either side).
  • When you're on the run, always use the slice spin shots to allow yourself time to get back in position. Never return a shot to either side of the court, you open up too many angles for them to use. By returning it to the middle of the court, you narrow down the angles they can use, which can give you time to get back in position.
  • Master the top spin shot. Used incorrectly you'll give away lots of points simply by hitting the ball out. Master it, and you can win most points in a couple of shots as you have your opponent running all over the court.
  • Ignore the risk shots, they're a waste of time. The risk serves are still useful though (especially if you see your opponent edge to one side or the other), so practise with them, they're easy to get right 90% of the time.
  • Practise using the lob. A number of players will come to the net, and though it's easier to beat them on the way in, if they get a bit too close to the net hold down the lob button and aim for the back of the court. Don't worry too much about it going out, if you hit it too short they'll just slam it past you any way.

That's all I can think of for now, I'll add more tips as they come to me.

arg! i just had to stop myself hurling the 360 out the window, threw the cat instead.

Yep said all that weeks ago, after an initial high where I thought it was great it soon became pap. I'd like the training and stats to actually mean something. The top guys where as difficult with 10 bronze stars as they where with 60 gold.

After 10,000 identical rallies I got bored.

It was the aiming that did my head in, why bother having a guy with 10 gold stars for accuracy if he 3 times in a row hits it long when you have the AI dead and buried.

cheers davey, useful clarification. never had the original but had smash court on the PS2 which didnt play much different. I think im 90% ok with CPU players cos they have patterns and definite weaknesses but online i feel like im massivley outclassed, is there some way of having max stats or something? cos im approaching all golds now and im still slower and weaker than most online players despite having full speed power and precision

I've never hit a shot long using either spin shot. I always aim towards the lower half of the court (taken from the perspective of being at the bottom), as it narrows the angle on shots and pushes your opponent further wide. It's a tip I learned from the original Top Spin which still works very well here.

^^^Good advice there Davey, im having major probs even returning the most basic of serves and as you said Federer likes to serve to the corner and i was getting caught out too much. Think he had something like 20 some odd aces etc :p.

I then decided to play with the women and found it much easier to play as it was a bit slower.

I'll have to add you to my friends list if thats ok with you Davey, perhaps one night we can play together and you can show me how to play it better than i do now. I take it your gamertag is the same as in your sig??

i really have to try if i want to put the ball out, i just tap the button and the direction i want to go

Davey has covered most tips aswell so i wont bother posting mine

But online i find the best thing to have is speed, as rp2000 found last night as i kept coming back to the centre of the court ;)

Cool, just added you to my friends list...please dont laugh at my gamerscore....i only just got started :p :o

Just got this and making my way through career now. Currently ranked around 150 midway through season 1. Won a couple of the small tournaments, and have all skills at level 2. It's a pretty good game.

Aye, ive had mine since like April 13th and im only just on my 3rd season, ranked 2nd atm but very close to Roddick at number 1 :) with 56/60 stars :D

Its a good game for playing over a long period, makes a nice break from the odd PGR race or Oblivion :)

I'm still only on my 2nd season but I'm ranked number 1 with less than 40 stars used so far :)

Nice one :) i think i let myself down by doing more training in the first season, the 2nd season i played and won almost every tourny, well i won everything i played and did a few special events and training - this season im playing everything except a minor because im gonna get my final stars. And ill play the special events.

I got 547Career points for season 2 so hoping to get the 1k and #1 achievements in S3 :)

I'm not going to bother with the special events any more as they don't generally give you much cash reward, mainly gold and silver stars, which is no good to me right now as all 40-ish stars I have are gold. I need to spend a bit more time training in my 3rd season to get my skills maxed out so I can take my character online.

i managed to win a match online a non ranked one with my character against somene as Federer, lost both rank matches ive played mind :(

But im not great against human players, dont really have a tennis mind
