*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

I got an external garage then the garden behind that, thats why debating if the pro inside would cover the garden or if i need an outdoor+ on the outside of the garage to cover.

Sounds like you need to pick up a cheap picostation and use the Ubiquiti firmware to flash it to a Unifi UAP. they work great outdoors :-)

Help needed please. I'm just a home user without any professional networking experience.
I bought the AC Pro as a speed booster for my mobile devices because my ISP Hyperoptic (1Gb package) router only gives speeds of 70Mb over wifi.
So today I've been trying to set up this AP.
I live in a modern apartment so Wifi range isn't an issue, but there are a lot of other router wifi signals around.
My current ethernet LAN setup goes like this:
Router - > switch -> AP, but would prefer to put the AP as a bridge between the Router and switch after I've gained experience with the AP settings.

In the windows desktop software Settings menu, I typed in my routers SSID and password but then it wasn't showing up on my iPhone wifi list so I changed the SSID to something else and then the AP showed up in the wifi list.

I've updated the firmware, Adopted the AP, made some changes but then I got lost in it all...
in the AP properties menu; configuration;
WLANS:
WLAN 2G I've turned off because on my iPhone 6s I was only getting internet speeds up to 70Mb on speedtest.net and now I get between 180-290Mb.
Network; Using DHCP (default)
Band Steering seems to drop to around 45-50Mb if I leave it off, while Prefer 5G seems to give the fastest speeds.
All other settings are default.

So two questions:
1) what settings can I change to get a bit more speed? as currently I'm barely touching 290Mb upload and up to 240 download from speedtest.net.
2) How do I configure the AP to run in bridge mode between the router and switch so that the router manages the ethernet IP's?

I can turn the wifi off on my router as its just not needed now I have this AP.

Changing the direction of the AC Pro makes no difference at all. The AP can be facing towards me or turned away there is no difference in speed at all.

The distance range of 5Ghz is shorter than I expected. With the AP located on the one side of my apartment to my iphone on the furthest wall in my bedroom I lose around 33% speed with no change in latency ping. But if I do end up using the AP as an ethernet bridge then the AP will be centrally located in my apartment so speeds should stay high everywhere inside my apartment on the 5Ghz channel.

...unless my controller settings can be improved.

So, for testing purposes I've re-wired the AP so its now in Bridge mode, turned off DHCP on the AP but now the iphone can't detect the AP wifi

DHCP should never have been enabled on the UniFi.

Bridge mode can refer to a few things. If you're confusing the wired Ethernet bridge the second Ethernet port offers with a wireless bridge you're *%$£%^ and it'll never work as you expect.

I've been trying different things out. I now have it all set up and every device is talking to each other between ethernet and wifi.

But internet speeds over wifi are still only 160-290Mb down and 270-298 up.Just need to work on trying for more speed now. Was hoping to get up to 450Mb like I read on some of the benchmark reviews as they all gave it a 300-450Mb result depending on various conditions/settings.

In the AP Properties menu: Configuration:

Radios:
Radio 2G:- Channel - Auto HT20. Transmit Power - Auto
Radio 5G:- Channel - Auto VHT40. Transmit Power - Auto

WLANS:
WLAN 2G is off
WLAN 5G is Default.

Network:
Configure IP - Using DHCP (have to use this as theres no off option, just static?)

Band Steering is set to Prefer 5G

Airtime Fairness is off

In the Controller windows software: Settings:
Wireless Networks:
Edit my AP:
Security is WPA Personal

Advanced Options:
VLAN is off
WPA Mode: WPA2 Only. Encryption: AES/CCMP Only

Back into Settings:
Networks: edit my AP:
IGMP is off
DHCP server is off
DHCP Guarding is off

All of the other options I haven't touched, all defaults.

Leave the DHCP settings at default. There's nothing you should need to be changing.

5GHz really doesn't like going through walls. If you're in an apartment this can be a good thing as you'll be in a really messy RF environment.

The messy RF environment is going to limit your available bandwidth on any frequency.

If I lived in an apartment and knew I was going to be running everything on wireless I'd have opted for the 100Mbit option.

This is the best result I've had so far with wifi:

From small app updates but mainly iOS updates (rarely).
iCloud gallery updates.
But mainly to upload video footage from my recorder app when I'm driving, each video segment is 3 minutes long at 500-750MB in size which one time took ages when I uploaded 10 together at 50-70Mb wifi speed.

Would be nice if everything can just zap across there and then between phone, desktop or cloud.

Have been playing around with the wireless settings of my Pro, best result over the last couple of days:

Probably average 350 download and 400 upload, using only the 5Ghz channel, in my apartment.

5Ghz all the way for modern apartments! just awesome.
Or get one of these Pro's for each room or floor of your house.
