*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

There are never a stupid questions when it comes to non-IT professionals playing in a more advanced IT space :) I'm a Civil Engineer so this is a 'hobby' of sorts!

The UDM Pro is acting as my router, i.e. its communicating with the fibre ONT and allows me to connect via DHCP to the network. The Server Essentials 'server' is acting as the domain controller including network wide DNS and DHCP. Everything on the wired network is fine and I never had issues with the older nano APs but this U6-LR has caused me nothing but trouble and it replaced the nano in the house... I've run an active directory setup since ~2012 after Server Essentials 2012 was released and I've never had this trouble until the U6-LR was installed last year.

The gen 2 switch is not layer 3, its not the pro version but the dumb version so no routing on board. Yes I could set a windows server or linux to act as my router but the UDM Pro offers a form factor and effectiveness that works for me and linked with the rest of the network and allowed me to depreciate my controller in docker which always caused me trouble.
So I'm going to follow up on this. Since my series of posts on my unifi network, nothing had really helped. I had shifted the default DNS settings in windows 11 to try and reduce the caching of DNS queries etc. but I was still dealing with issues and it was apparently more prevailent with outages on our phones starting to occur. I did some reading and found other issues with the U6-LR and figured that a few days ago that it had hit a problem that could only be resolved bby replacing it... so I did! Bought a U6 Enterprise, plugged it in on tuesday to replace the U6-LR (same size drop in) and voila everything started working without issue. Internet issues resolved themselves, DNS issues disappeared and everything just was working as expected.

So its early days but I think there is a serious issue with the U6-LR which the gen 6 APs have solved.

Anything is possible. The DNS functionality that you have an issue with is Layer 7 so pretty remote from the hardware. There would need to be a U6-LR specific firmware issue (definitely possible as with 6.5.54) but more likely a software or configuration issue elsewhere in your network.

As has been stated elsewhere, access points don’t really do anything with DNS but if you add the U6-LR back in (leave the U6-E in place) do the problems reoccur on the whole network or only on clients of the U6-LR?

I'd have to add the U6-LR back in to a vacant slot on my switch... however I do have an in-wall HD in my outdoor cabin that my phone doesn't have any issues with but as soon as I came inside browsing on my phone became inconsistent... The only thing I changed was the AP, nothing else has changed in the network at all yet all the devices have improved.... I mean it was a good excuse to upgrade anyway :-)

Have you checked the switch port statistics that it is connected to for Tx/Rx errors?

Nothing obviously wrong at Port level. I've just reintroduced the u6lr to the network and locked my daughters pc and tablet to it. Will see what complaints I get over the next few days.

Interestingly my partners mirroring of her Android phone (dumb exercise app) to our nvidia shields is smooth now with the u6e whereas it was stuttery and had just general issues when using the u6lr.

Good evening all

Just been looking at my UniFi IOs app and it’s always been the same way but 90% of my wireless connected devices just show as MAC addresses? have the odd Amazon or ring doorbell does that seem Right? For instance I can’t see my iPhone 13 or my wife’s iPhone 14?

Thanks

What’s running the Network Application? Is it up to date? Is your iOS app up to date?

I'm tempted to swap out my Edge router X for the UXG lite when it releases and also swap my AC lite for a U6 pro. I've got an 8port-150W switch to that I would use also.
I noticed the UXG lite is showing on the Ubiquiti pages as coming soon.

Gets expensive when you add the cloud key / cloud management requirements - https://uk.store.ui.com/uk/en/pro/category/all-cloud-keys-gateways/products/uxg-lite £300+ all in

Yes you could do self hosted, but even so.

It depends on whether or not you already have any form of Cloud Key. If you do, it’s not unreasonable given what they charge for other equipment. It is expensive for a 1GbE throughput router though. Let’s say it performs as well as a MikroTik hEX, it’s basically double the money.

I’m also told that there are literally tens of thousands of USGs and USG Pros still in use and this would logically replace those for anyone still holding out. They should have launched it 4 years ago though.

I don't have any cloudkey currently and have always just managed it locally on my PC.
WJA96, You are correct. It seems to have taken them a long time to release an updated USG. I bought the Edgerouter X as at the time I had heard the USG was being phased out and that was a few years back now.
