*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

They use the word 'upgrade' wrongly. What happens is if there's a different version of firmware available than you're currently running you'll be asked if you want to upgrade. Normally it would be the case that the version on the controller is newer than the version you're running but if you've been using beta firmware, have done a custom upgrade or they pull a firmware version then the controller will have an older version but you'll still be offered an 'upgrade' to the other version. It's poor wording that often gets complained about on the Ubnt forums.

The absolute latest version is 3.7.49.6201 but that's not offered through the controller yet, you need to do a custom upgrade.

5.4.11 which is also listed as the latest version (or at least it was yesterday when I checked).

I don't think I've done any custom upgrades to the APs at all.

/edit - Ahah, when I go to the upgrade screen now, it's offering me 3.7.47.6194 for the access points which I guess I may as well do.

Got up this morning, looked at the controller to see my downstairs access point was showing "managed by other" which I though unusual considering loads of my devices were still connected through it and working on my network.

Tried to adopt it, no joy. Connected to it via SSH and issued a full reset command but no joy. I can't re-adopt it back to my controller. All my wireless devices are now using the upstairs access point which is fine but it's not right.

I just can't get this back onto my controller.

not as bad as it looks, although the Vendor contact timeline posted is a little worrying :/
Yeah I agree its not as serious as it might look at first, but it's a good example of how poor Ubiquiti can be sometimes.

Don't get me wrong, I love their stuff and its been a great improvement for me, but the company themselves leave a lot to be desired sometimes.

How to play safe?

Make sure you always do a backup before any updates, especially if you plan to upgrade your existing installation.

It is also recommend to make a backup if you are on a controller version later than 5.4.11. Once you upgrade the firmware the controller will be on 5.4.11, so if you were on something different then you'll need to reinstall it and then restore your backup.

Using UniFi v4.8.X or Beta / Alpha?

If you prefer to upgrade the firmware but still wish to continue using v4.8.X, create a backup of your controller prior to upgrading, upgrade the firmware, purge unifi, install v4.8.20 using the .deb file, then restore your controller backup during the setup wizard. This method will avoid the need to downgrade your controller, which isn't supported.

Notes:

All system customizations are removed on firmware upgrade. This would include the UniFi VoIP controller, if you have it installed. Please make sure to backup your VoIP controller configuration, and any other customizations prior to firmware upgrade.

Changes in 0.6.1:

UniFi Controller

  • Bundle UniFi Controller 5.4.11. See HERE for controller release notes.
UCK System

  • Important security improvements.
UCK WebUI

  • Add French and German translations.
How to update the latest firmware:

  • From UniFi Cloud Key WebUI: Maintanance -> CHECK FOR UPDATES (in FIRMWARE section) -> UPDATE NOW.
  • From UniFI Controller: Settings -> Maintenance -> CHECK FOR UPDATES (in CloudKey Firmware section) -> APPLY UPDATE
  • From UniFi Cloud Key WebUI: Maintanance -> UPDATE MANUALLY. From here you can either paste the URL, or if you downloaded the binary you can select the file locally on your computer.
  • From SSH:
    ubnt-systool fwupdate http://<URL>/somefirmware.bin

Just updated with no problems, as normal it contains firmware updates.
