I always liked the look of this game. Is it hard to get into, much of a learning curve? Okay to use with just kb&m or would a joystick be preferred?

KB&M is preferred for everything apart from Sim, tbh. I play with a Joystick for RB just because I always prefer flight sims this way. Suggest you start with tanks, very easy to get into.

easy to get into, no skill needed on Arcade Battles, kinda tells you where to shoot, weak spots etc....but Realistic and Sim Battles takes a little learning. KB+M is good for this game, probably the most popular control method out there I'd say. I've heard ppl give Joystick flying a go, but it's just not as precise as KB+M apparently.

This. You can pull better manouvers but KB&M players have instructor + laser-like aim, which I'm pretty sure is the better end of the deal.

If you're literally brand new to the game, when you start it, it'll ask you what nation you want to play... and you get a free 'premium' vehicle for that nation. It's low-tier, but gets you started.

Tanks, I'd probably say the best of the bunch is the German PzII or the British tank, the Russian one is terrible and dies to any hit, and is apallingly slow.

If you go planes, the Russian plane is good, but it puts you into higher level matches if you fly it, so if you start that, save it until you have other BR 1.3 or 1.7 planes to fly with, rather than just biplanes.

I'm happy to play low-tier games most times, so find me in-game or on Steam if you do get it installed.

Wow, just got the APDS ammo for my Comet. TRANSFORMS the 17pdr. It's an absolute killing machine now, the change in ammo type means (a) shots don't bounce all the time and (b) when it pens it actually does damage inside the enemy tank.

Otherwise I was getting pretty annoyed that the 17pdr was so gimped.

Don't get too excited, if the RNG decides it doesn't like you the APDS will bounce :p

I've had it bounce off things like Panzer III's which by all rights the damned thing should go in one side and out the other.

77MM HV is pretty much a 17pdr with a shorter breech/barrel and smaller propellant charges. The actual damaging part of the shell is the same as the 17pdr (just has slightly lower penetration/range)

So is the BlackPrince the only 17pdr with APDS in the game currently? I wonder why they held it back from the A30 Avenger yet gave it to the Comet at the same BR?

Yup, this is my understanding.

Was talking to Matt about this last night, I think we both agreed that in-game the US 76mm seems on-par with the 17pdr, which is just silly.

Yep, because we weren't stupid enough to put a massive derp-cannon on a medium tank chassis and expect it to work properly. Maybe that's where we went wrong. (T44-122 anyone?!)

Because Gaijin doesn't want anyone beating up glorious stronk soviet tanks too easily?

If anything, the US 76mm could be *more* effective, because when you do get a penetration, you've a decent explosive charge which may wreck the enemy tank. If you get a penetration with the 17pdr (RNG decides to allow your shell through) then you've got either the disappointment of a 'hit' only, or a critical which actually doesn't prevent the enemy from firing his shell at you, often killing or crippling you before you can reload.

At 4.0, it's a problem, at 5.0 and 5.3 the same gun is just not competitive, given the way the ammo performs.

Agreed!

If anything it was because we were too stupid to make the turret rings big enough to take a full size 17pdr, not because we didn't want to use it on medium tanks.

BTW: The Challenger has APDS ammo on the full 17pdr so that makes all of 2 tanks. Not bad for ammo that was issued as standard from at least 1944 onwards.

Anyone on today? I'm not at work today.

Only this evening, this work-thing gets in the way sadly. :(

There's APDS on the Caernarvon and Centurion, as well as the Comet and the Charioteer and Challenger, all in different BR's. (Also Black Prince, but it's too expensive IMO) I don't have any of these shells yet. :(

It would be interesting to see how HESH works in WT, but I think we all know it won't do anything like what it should, and the research-grind is mind-boggling to say the least.

But yes, we still persisted with a terrible state of armaments manufacture in Britain, adapting engines from buses or using American modifications for far longer than we should have, only to end up with some of the best tanks in the world, just after WW2. Derp.
