Oh dear... might have overdone it abit!

Could people please set history states to 1 and cache levels to 4 as per the original speedtests instructions, and close all programs bar photoshop if convinient to do so? I know the test takes a little longer to run but all results posted so far are largely useless if not performed under the same parameters. OS, Hardware and PS version would also be great! Cheers folks :)

could I ask what you are going to use the mac pro for?

the reason i ask is i'm a graphic/web designer and i can be running photoshop, illustrator, indesign, bridge, pages, numbers and god knows what else at once and my old white macbook (albeit with 4GB of ram) does not skip a bit, the only thing i've ever managed to make it jutter on is the new 3d stuff in photoshop cs4...

i'm going to be getting a new iMac which will be a lot more powerful, but i can't imagine what could stress an iMac to prompt getting a pro unless it was professional level 3D work or video editing?

am i missing something?

iMac hasn't got anywhere NEAR the expandability that I want. Nor does it accept incoming HDMI/optical in for a PS3.

I'd rather get a 2.93Ghz 15" MBP than an iMac if I was going that route!

And no im not a "pro" user, but I HATE lag, and lightroom on my MBP does it too much.

1TB Photo library with a 300Gb Veloci is the win :D

Unfortunately Apple give you no choice if you want more than a dual core and a remotely good graphics card. They just rub salt in the wound with the new Quad pricing.. Seems incredibly few people who brought the old Octo's for photoshop/illustrator/inDesign work realised they had another processor sat about doing naff all almost all the time. But then 4Gb ram limit and no good scratchdisk option for the Imac didn't make that a brilliant option either.

3.2ghz (But it never hits 100% cpu usage), I do have 16GB of ram though (But again, I only get just above 7GB reported usage from PS).

People still don't listen to me when I tell them you don't need a Mac for Photo Editing either.. Funny that  (I'm sure your wallet won't want me to read out the figures :p)

Ofcourse you dont need a mac pro for photo editing. Whoever says that is a tool, end of.

What you do need a mac pro for is a stable, upgradable machine running a great OS without having the hassles of Windows

My self-built Windows-running tower is stable, upgradable and hassle-free, too.

I prefer OS X and use my MacBook as my main PC, but there's personal preference, and there's FUD :)

I notice a big difference in reaction times compared to my MBP in lightroom.

Therefore it is worth it to someone who hates lag ;)

Didnt say you wont notice a difference, just said its not necessary :)
My 2 year old MBP nearly held up for everything I needed, except for the fact I needed more storage, wanted 2x24" monitors in the future and a better GPU(8800GT).

Yeaaaaaa, two baby :p

(I wish - one has been sent back)

This new one runs 10C cooler, has a perfect case BUT has issues with the second drive door  and STILL has the mouse issue.

FirebarUK, where have you found references to this on other forums?

Would help me and Apple to work out WTF is going on!!

It was on macrumors but I didn't note the thread name, sorry :(

Fortunately I've been lucky with mine, everything is A-OK. Apart from 1 thing, Option + Eject doesn't eject the second drive, I have to do that manually from the icon in the top toolbar.

I recon 10.5.7 will fix this, but for some reason (I would be impressed and depressed at the same time if it was this issue that was causing it) its still not released.

Must be this week at some point :/
