Having had a quick look about the net and by no means intensively there does seem to be a lot of problems with win7 and ati 5 series cards with a lot of people saying card works fine on vista\xp but they have problems on win7. Seems to me maybe it is a software problem and possibly not ati's but MS's so a little patience may be the best thing. End of the day you have at least a one year warranty and while i understand that having a card not fully working is not a happy time i would imagine ati and ms are working to sort this out asap so give it a month and see what turns up in terms of new drivers\hotfixes from either company. But i think it is safe to say talk of low quality cards from ati is a non starter as there are too many people with working setups to blame quality at this point.
but theres people using win7 + 5x00 card without any issues, so it can't be win7, because if it was it would happen to everybody with a 5x00 + win7

Not necessarily it could be a combination of components, something as simple as a control interrupt error in a driver kernel. Who knows?
I may be missing something here but if it works ok in Vista then surely it can't be a hardware problem.
it worked in win7 originally though, now no matter what ive tried only vista installs ok, win7 doesnt.
kylew, i havnt rma'd yet because im trying to determine why it wont install, and perhaps find a fix. you know it really annoys me when people say rma this rma that, finding out the problem and a fix if possible is much better, only in worst case scenario i will rma it, which is likely to be soon as having payed for win7 i expect to use that.

Theres clearly a prob with them imo, as look around, no ones got them, some places have removed them as they can't get them, and some places have them as pre-order, which they've been for weeks, then think, if they are as rare as rocky horse *****, then how come theres thread after thread of faulty 5800's popping up day in day out.
Clearly it does not add up, so to me, the failure rate must be astronomical.

Well yeah, but the point is you're having issues with it. Something's obviously wrong. An RMA would likely be the quickest solution to your problems.
Your card has issues and you've confirmed that against another 5850.
I was also commenting on the fact that you seem to be taking this personally, as if they've sent you a card knowing it doesn't work, just for a laugh.
As I've said, say you move back to nVidia and the same thing happens, where do you go from there?
Do you wise up and realise hardware faults are just faults, they happen at times? Or will you be the same about nVidia cards, say they're crap and full of problems and go and buy an S3?
not once on here have i set out to say nvidia is better than ati blah blah, ive shared my experiences with the two - so im going to get slated now for saying that every nvidia card ive had, has had no problems?!

this nvidia>ati war is nonsense, obviously im going to be disgruntled after going from one to the other and have problems, that is normal > not a dig at ati, not once have i said ati are crap/suck/rubbish or anything like that - just to clear any confusion people have.
for me personally, i like to try and figure the problems of things out, then if no joy rma the item, if no one did this you would never see guides and tutorials on how to fix things, as everyone would be replacing them!
i need to test this on mates pc whenever i can, this should help identify any other possible causes.

I'm not calling you a fanboy, what I am saying that though is that you're making up comparisons as if they're fact.
Especially when it appears that you have a faulty card, to make such comparisons is bizarre.

thats one in how many which is working.
my point is if he rma it back, he'll be waiting along time and when he finally gets a replacemeant theres a high chance it'll be the same or worser.

The fact that he's tried another 5850 which worked with no problems, I don't see how there's a high chance he'll get a dodgy card back.
Statistically speaking, he's far LESS likely to get a dodgy card second time running, and the likely hood decreases even less with each replacement until it becomes apparent that someone's cursed.

Come on, that's a slight exaggeration. A dozen, 2 dozen or even 50, in what? Thousand(s) sold. I don't see its a high chance at all. I wouldn't even comment without some knowledge of the actual failure rate, its just speculation.
if u knew what i meant, please don't point out my mistakes. most people here know the reason why it's difficult for me.
theres a number of people on this forum that have been having problems/issues including me.
