Oh Dear, more ATI 58xx mysteries!!

Let me think... My Sapphire 5850 has been working perfectly for the last two weeks since I got it. I haven't experienced ANY issues in Windows 7. Windows Experience Index gives me 7.7 out of 7.9 for graphics (as it would mean anything...). I played Crysis Warhead at Enthusiast settings, AAx4@1680x1050 smoothly. The Radeon even works with GeForce PhysX card I bought recently (despite having few smaller issues with the latter, as you have to "patch" Nvidia drivers forcing it to work). The temps are low, the card doesn't make any strange noises, fan is set-up manually by me in MSI Afterburner so it never goes above 35% and the temps are still below 65*C at load. When I switch all fans low in my build, I can barely hear it working. I didn't even have to touch Sapphire Drivers' CD - just downloaded official final drivers for 58** from AMD website - 9.10 Catalysts with CCC.

Did I receive a different card than people complaining?

im guessing you did NOT flash your graphics card bios;):D

Forgot to mention. I'm also experiencing a noisy 100% fan issue at startup. Oh, it comes from the XFX GeForce 9600GSO. Didn't sorted it yet, what a shame... Will try to flash the BIOS though. Maybe with the one from Asus or do they only make them for Radeons' overclockers? :)

You're still here?

You're adamant that the problems I'm having is due to flashing the bios of my 5870, yet you have no evidence/reason why this would cause a problem. Infact you've been told the opposite by everyone else here, that flashing with a different bios is perfectly acceptable providing the cards are identical.

So why do you persist? Tell me in detail exactly how flashing a bios from a different manufacture will damage the card?

You do realise that when ATI produce these cards, they are all identical, they then go to the various board partners and are flashed with their own bios. So my 5870 could have easily been put in the batch sent off to Sapphire/ASUS etc and been flashed with their bios and had their stickers put on it.

Before you reply, please read everything above I have typed, as I have the courtesy to read everything you type.

you get some solid evidence and post it up , that every 5870 is the exact same

Gigabyte = Sapphire = XFX = OEM

To reiterate,

ive had problems with my card from day one - not constant, but enough to notice it. I ran my card out the box for 2 weeks before even attempting to flash the card, to test default stability - also never overclocked it and problems were there.

Believe it or not, flashing from the Sapphire to MSI BIOS actually increased stability in some areas, this is the same MSI bios many others around here are using.

Its been hit and miss with these cards from day one, some will run perfect out the box, some will work but not so great, some wont even boot at all.

I have tested mine through multiple scenarios, stock motherboard bios settings, stock gpu overclock settings, stock bios, clean install of windows - you name it and the problems are there, nothing to do with flashing bios, overclocking or anything as the problems were there before any of this happened.

And to the people saying dont use Driver Sweeper, before i installed this ATI i uninstalled all Nvidia Control Panel and drivers, rebooted in safe mode and deleted any left over nvidia folders, ran ccleaner then installed the ATI card. I ran Driver Sweeper and it picked up about 6 Nvidia entries left over.

Its naive to think the problems with the card are user related, as i repeat, my problems and others have been happening since getting the card out of the box - its trial and error.

Can you link me to a copy of the MSI bios you're using, I may aswell give it a try.

Most of them get updated when this happens.

And there's quite a lot of places where people say uninstalling a driver or installing a later version without installing a new one causes just as many problems.

These programs only exist because vendors don't anlways clean up after themselves and are lazy and sometimes don't bother cleaning everything up. I personally started using leaner programs when the nvidia 8800 came out and their drivers were leaving crap lying around which windows was using so you were getting some components using old version and new stuff which was causing those GPU not responding messages.

What’s to say that certain registry entries and paths are not left for good reason, you wouldn't want one of these programmes preventing your new driver functioning correctly because it cleared out some flags left in the registry for good reason.

All I am saying is that introducing another layer of complexity introduces another layer where things can and will go wrong.

On a note more in keeping with the thread... I wouldn't be surprised by the look of some of these issues if there is some kind of issue with certain chipsets and or motherboard/memory combos; It wouldn't be the first time and certainly won’t be the last.

Personally i never got any further with my win7 64 bit install than the graphics drivers.
As soon as they were installed i was lucky if the comp lasted 10 mins before locking up or green or brown screening as above, and this was just at the desktop.
Can even happen at the login screen.
No thoughts of o/clocking or changing bios's, hell i never even got as far as even thinking of installing a game.
Totally unuseable and yes i am very happy for those of you with no problems.
But what is really annoying is those of you who try to make out the cards can't be faulty and its all user error, or its software error.
Well i am sorry but in my book whether its hardware or a software error, if it does not work correctly then its not fit for purpose.
I might be the unlucky one out of 100 but i doubt it.

Hyperst please m8 give it up your wrong and only making yourself look bad continuing with the whole "flashing your card is causing the problems" because many who havn't are experiencing the same problems flashing the bios is irrelevent here although i accept you don't understand that trust me and the others who are familiar with things ok :).

My 5870 has run perfectly since i got it (second batch OcUK got in) on vista 64 and all drivers i have tried have also given me no problems so far so maybe it's a batch issue some batches have a problem some don't it's the only way i can explain how some of us are fine and some of you are having problems.

I would heartily enforce the opinion of never using driver cleaners anymore they had a slight use once but these days are more likely to cause a problem then solve one both main companys now make drivers that are happy to install straight over older versions.

All i can say to people with problems is if you cannot sort it cut your losses return to stock (if you have oc'd) see how it goes if it runs ok theres the problem if it doesn't rma it and get a replacement. Either way i hope those having problems can find a resolution to whatever problem they are having quickly wish you all luck :).
