What exactly is the point of the water jump in the steeplechase?

I get that it's a bit higher than the rest, but what exactly does the water add to it? They only need a stride to get out of the water on the other side, so it can't slow them down that much.

Well, obviously it's to make things harder, and as said it is to mimic the original steeplechase on horses. The pit is 70cm deep at the hurdle, and slopes up to rejoin the track, so the better you are at the jump the less time you spend in the water.
