From every interview I saw with the head honcho of GB athletics he had this "he'll do what I say when I say it" attitude, ignoring the fact that people like to perform differently. While lots of athlete's will do well going to the portugal camp, others will do better on their own.
Especially as he's managing an injury, its his body, he decides who the best person to treat it is and decides whose advice he trusts and takes, not anyone else.
He was the only person remotely capable of winning it, he's funded himself but my take on the lack of communication was they simply expected him to report and do as they tell him to without question. You MIGHT get away with demands like that if you were actually paying the guy, but they were simply looking to benefit from his performance at his own cost.
Olympics can be great, but its not worth risking your health for nor being treated like crap. He dealt with his injury the best he could, trained the best he could, tried his best, failed, to then have a go at him for it is beyond ridiculous. For every athlete that has won a medal there is 50 others who have worked exactly as hard and come away feeling completely awful for failing, you should be giving those people MORE support and sympathy.
He's now in need of surgery because he tried his best to get fit, he didn't injure himself on purpose, he could have given up months ago. He's trained for years trying to make it here and thoroughly deserved his shot.
