Olympic Opening Ceremony

You're in the minority. We weren't trying to be impressive per se, just different.

I'm always in the minority in this country - used to it.

China's = impressive
UK = terrible and boring

Different is good, when it works... this was just terrible.

Why would we try and educate the world on our history? Surely it would have been a better idea to advertise the country as it is now?

A much much better scenario than trying any of this ******** - would have just been to spend all the money on the biggest fireworks display the world has even seen... now that would have been awesome!

I'm one of the minority who actually has to deal with people from outside this country on an almost daily basis, something most don't... it's made us a laughing stock.

Seems the only people who liked it were brits - have you even seen the perception from elsewhere? We're a joke...

It wasn't even funny bad... just bad bad

Really? fireworks?... what a great idea. I'm sure nobody has ever seen a large firework display. It would have brought the house down.

As you can tell, I'm not the most creative of people... but it would have been a heck of a lot better than the **** we were given!

People want a spectacle, not a pathetic attempt at history lesson for a country a surprising amount of the world don't care about anymore. It feels as if they were presenting it as a "this is why you should remember us" kind of thing... abysmal.

Source?

I've been talking with my team in the middle east today (Sunday is a Monday over there) and it's had universal praise from everyone. Brits, German, French, American, Chinese, Arab, Indian among others so i think that's pretty good cross section of the globe.

News reports have been very favorable too!

But to be honest, who really cares what everyone else thinks? It's our Olympics and we should be proud of what Great Britain has done and continues to do because quite frankly very few countries can compare.

I hardly think you're qualified to tell us what people want to see. If you had it your way, the 2012 ceremony would have been a load of people in a stadium watching a firework display. ;)

Wasn't the Beijing ceremony also largely centred around their history and contributions?

I thought the ceremony was excellent - unique and with enough spectacle and charm to make it very British. Tbh anyone who is laughing at this is probably ignorant enough for me not to care about their opinion. Very well played by Danny Boyle - he delivered the historic moment everyone wanted him to.

I feel both Thomas Heatherwick and Danny Boyle should be knighted.

Danny Boyle for pulling off a spectacular show. It was awesome when I went to the first technical rehearsal (even with parts missing). Some elements did not translate so well on screen (e.g. they should have shots of the whole scene as there were too many in ya face shots) but the inclusion of so many British elements (bar Wallace and Gromit :() is excellent.

Thomas Heatherwick for his genius work of art (the cauldron(. Beautiful idea of the petals representing each nation coming together and participating and also the ability to give each nation a petal after the games.
However I am really gutted it has not been situated high up over the stadium for all to see. (wonder if there is a petition to get this in motion?)

Just the people I've been speaking with.

But then I suppose the only ones talking to me over the weekend are at minimum "friendly acquaintances"... and I only really get friendly with people who think in a similar way to me - so that might explain the perception.

I'm rather surprised by the positive reports.

I care about perception because I'm out of the country a lot and people make assumptions of you due to your affinity with a country.

I still, personally, think it was terrible & boring - but I'm glad I was wrong about the majority of foreign perception.

In the years to come this ceremony will be resoundingly held as a successful triumphant showing of all things British, having just watched it for a second time it's clever, humorous, bold, modern, multi-cultural, epic, gracious and at times touching.

How anyone can come to the conclusion it was in any way bad astounds me...

I assume this is through work?

Have you even been to work since the ceremony?
