Olympic Track Cycling

I don't think the points race is as important as it might seem at first. I mean, you'd think losing 20 points to someone trying to lap you might be crucial, but all those points get you is the classification in the event, which are where the points for the overall Omnium are found. If the rider that finishes ahead of you in the standings has 1 point or 100 points more, they still only gain a single overall point on you. So is it really worth putting all that effort in to gaining a lap in the points race when it may leave you tired for the elimination (as the Polish girl proved)?

You dont get an easy ride whichever way you do it. If you dont get a lap, then you have to go for the sprints. Most people would find it harder to do 4 sprints than 1 longer effort needed to get a lap.

With the TT being the last event too, you want to be as close to your peak as possible for that.

I know it's not that important in some regards as while it sounds a lot to win 20 points in the race it will only ever translate to a few points in the overall standings but 8 people managed to get a lap on the field so that immediately puts the rest down in 9th unless they win 4+ sprints or such combination of placings as to make up for that. I suppose I just thought the rest of the main group would fight a little bit harder to prevent it from happening, I can only imagine it's a bit demoralising if you set off on a sprint to lap the main field and they hammer it back up to you so you've expended all this effort for nothing.

For the little it's worth the pictures are below, none came out particularly well.

Shocked if Hoy and Vic miss out on Gold, and Alistair and Jonathan look about as solid as possible for a Gold and Silver in the Triathlon.

Trott's looking very strong too!

We shall see, could be a very big day!

500m time trial, which is today at 16.53. The scratch race is at 16.07 but I thought she'd already done that but might have heard wrong.

Yeah my bad, obviously not with it today as I'm hearing completely the wrong things from the commentators :p. They said it may come down to the time of the scratch race so assumed it'd already been raced.

That was because if the 500m goes to form, Trott should win and Hammer should finish 2nd. So they'd be on equal points, barring the result of the scratch race.

Just noticed this story about Bauge apparently more or less accusing Jason Kenny (and by implication the rest of the GB cyclists) of doing something unfair to win. Anyone know if the story has been reported correctly or whether it has been blown up out of nothing?

If that is being reported correctly then it's a bit of a disappointment, I thought that initially Bauge had handled the loss with a fair amount of class.

Going to be a very interesting day on the track, 2 legends race for the last time and Trott going for gold.

We could walk home with 4 golds today, 3 from track and 1 from Triathlon.

who are the two legends racing for the last time?

only one retiring is vic, hoy aint retiring

Hoy hasn't announced he's retiring, but others have been chosen above him for his events, and hes a lot older than the rest of the team.

This will definitely be his last Olympics. He may go for some more World Champs though.
