Omega 3 Supplements

^^

I take liquid for now.

I also read that in liquid form, once the top has been opened the oil can be oxigenised and lose some of it's effectiveness. Probably the only plus point of capsules is that they all stay fresh.

To those taking capsules, have a look at the EPA/DHA mg per capsule, because a lot only have around 240mg per cap. It is recommended you at least get around 1000mg a day and you can't really take more capsules as you will probably od on the other vitamins, so look for the extra strength ones.

It's probably placebo, but since I've been taking this, I'm not aching as much and my joints feel much more loose.

Your right, the problem with caps is that they are under dosed, I take at least 3000mg per day. Another issue is that its made from gelatin, I hate that stuff. Udo's Choice is good because it is all organic, high dosed per tablespoon and in a dark jar.

Neither do anything, so take your pick.

Care to explain why my cuts never heal as quick when I take it then...... or the fact I have virtually no bone/muscle pain - even after strenuous excercise ?

Or the fact that my fathers consultant stated (like most do) that cod liver oil and Omega 3's should not be taken if you are having a major operation. Or the fact that most good doctors now regard Omega 3 as effective as other prescribed blood thinners and particlarly useful after having a heart attack ?

I've taken a one-a-day tablet 3 times a day for the last 12 or so years. Giving me 450mg of EPA & DHA and 200mg of Evening Primrose oil of which 15mg is GLA. And believe me, I can tell the difference when I don't take it (as can most people who gain benefit from it)

And for the record - the blood thinning ability of Omega 3 is only one of the many things it does in the body that has been proven and tested - along it's ability to reduce swelling and help with neuromuscular problems and help with many aspects of mental ability.

I's say most commercial omega 3 supplements are a complete rip off with very low EPA/DHA and with synthetic vit A and D added. There are a few good ones, but you won't get them in Boots or Holland and Barrett, that's for sure.

Carlson and Garden Of Life are good brands imo. Alternatively, eat fish!

Generally liquid form will have a higher EPA/DHA over capsules. As mentioned pay attention to these values as they're the only ones that count - the Holland and Barret variety will not exactly have large concentrations

Fish oils won't stop DOMS. If you're not getting DOMS then it's because your intensity/volume/frequency of training is below (within) the threshold your body is capable of managing. In other words you're not pushing your body as hard as you think.

I like Mackerel thankfully, no make that love Mackerel. So no, I don't take supplements :)

I'd not say capsules were worse than liquid, but bear in mind there's a tiny amount in that gel capsule so you may want to take a few to equal a 5ml teaspoon of oil.

But my advice would be eat fish, this guy knows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQhfknFrlA0

Got any proper, double-blind trial, evidence? I mean, not sponsored by makers of the stuff?

Just about every trial conducted on Pharamceuticals is funded and overseen by the drug manufacturers.

Why should it be any different with food supplements? Who will fund a trial if there is no potential profit in it for them? Just because the company involved in the manufacture of the product is involved in the trial doesn't neccesarily mean the trial has less efficacy, if that were the case we could assume virtually all pharmaceuticals on the market are approved off the back of biased trials.

I take 2 of the triple strength omega 3 caps from simplysupplements, no bad side effects aside from the smelly burps afterwards! :D I feel more sluggish and less sharp when not taking them, it could just be a placebo though :s

Anyone else take Omega 3 supplements?

Started taking pure cod liver oil in liquid form as it has higher doses of the important acids EPA and DHA. Taste doesn't really bother me, just hold your nose :)

Whats best Capsules or Liquid?

Didn't think there was much epa/dpa in cod liver oil, I take 3g of fish oil caps every day which works out about 1.2g of epa and 600mg of dpa (something ike that anyway) and it does me a world of good; energy levels are much more consistent then they used to be.

Correct, higher levels of vitamins A and D, hence it being directly sourced from the liver where fat soluble (and a little of the water soluble in actual fact) vitamins are stored.

For those taking glucosamine, if you are finding it isn't working as well as hoped (will for some, not for others + don't forget to give it quite a while to 'kick in'), then try stacking it MSM (Sulphur). The last paper I read on this supported the combination of these two than in comparison with the commonly used Chondroitin.

I tried to start taking the capsules but found that my burps were rather fishy :S

Now it's easier to get it in fish form or there are other foods which have Omega3 added.

I take seal oil every day for omega-3's. Made from baby harp seals, the best!

Yup, lowering refined sugars helps as well. What you put in is crucial to thought and behaviour. You wouldn't expect a car to run on orange juice. (Unless it's modded). :D
