<omg> Duke Nukem Forever news </omg>

It was officially announced over ten years ago. Since then we've had all the hype, screenshots/videos etc....still we are waiting. They havent produced anything concrete since 2001 - They just keep switching engines and starting over again.

They don't "keep switching engines". As a matter of fact, they switched engines...

Once. From Quake to the Unreal Engine. And they've re-written the engine to an extent that the only bits of the engine that are truly the Unreal engine are the networking, scripting and level editor.

And you haven't had the hype for DNF. You've had the hype for a very old game which they were going to call DNF, which was scrapped after they decided it wasn't good enough.

wasnt it quake 2 > quake 3 > unreal > some other engine?

yes so they build a game (a game, the game, same difference) didnt like it, scrapped it and started again. all while switching engines lol

They only switched engines once - Joe Siegler said himself "We had too few programmers early on. Some tech took too long to do. We switched engines (only once despite what you might read elsewhere). We started over a time or two. And a bunch of other stuff. Point is, we know it's late, and you know it's late. Let's stop talking about it, ok? There is no new way you can think of to tell us how long the game has taken - we've heard 'em all."

It probably works out better for them to release no game than to release a bad game. They could potentially ruin the whole Duke franchise by releasing a bad game! But 3DRealms aren't exactly short of cash. Head over to their jobs page and you get the impression they care more about making great games than churning out anything to get some money.

I think this is going to be the single greatest game in existence for FPS full on awesomeness.

It's Duke, it has strippers and bubblegum and swear words.

It's impossible for it not to be bad and 3DRealms have not made an ounce of hype for it ever since going silent, they're just slowly developing and seeing what the competition delivers to better them when the game hits announcement time.

!

I also don't understand why people are comparing it to SOF3 or STALKER, for starters it's not made by a dev who have "value" in their name...

"slowly developing" is the problem - it's being developed far more slowly than PC hardware, so it's just falling further behind. By now, the "significant progress" referred to might be that they're made a tentative agreement on what font is probably the best for the name on the box.

This is the game that was retired from vapourware awards because it was a guaranteed winner every time.

Or maybe they're hoping that 10 years is long enough for people to have forgotten about it, so there won't be any impossible hype to live up to.

It was good enough to begin with, but by the time it fell a couple of years behind PC hardware, it wasn't good enough any more.

If these new rumours have any substance at all, and that's a big if, what reason is there to think it won't happen again? A couple of good-looking screenshots in 2008 and the game scrapped in 2010 because 2008 games won't look good in 2010. Then by about 2015, the next "soon to be released" rumours can start.

I still have the original Duke Nukem 3D on PC. Great game, a barrel of laughs. Crass, tasteless...funny and with great gameplay. Shake it, baby! I'm a little surprised that they never bought out a sequel to such a successful game with such a memorable character, but they didn't. Duke Nukem Forever In Development isn't it and I see no reason to think it ever will be.

Hype or not, after 10 years in development people shouldnt expect anything less than some sort of wondergame that makes Crysis look like Wolf3D.

Why do people come up with these silly statements..

The Game has NOT! been in development for 10 years... Youll probably find they have changed the engine, game design and art assests so many times that if they game was to come out next year.. All those assests were probably made in the past 2~3years tops..

The only thing that has lasted tens years is the name DNF.. which due to its bad reputation probably wont be the same name it gets at launch anyway.

PS. I have worked on game titles that have spanned 2 generations of consoles.. but they weren't in development 10 years as each generation they went through the game needed to be designed from the ground up.

tbh, it's probably a good thing for a game to be considered a farce these days and have many slating it way before release.
Would make a nice change from the "OMG, this game will be awesome, the best thing ever!!!" hype, leading up to the release where we then see a massively average game and disappointment.

I think it can only be a good thing, they have a script they have wrote, rewrote, rewrote again over and over, over 10 years, putting in more and more funny/clever/entertaing parts to the game, if they still find it entertaining after 10 years, and even more entertaining to them (personally); to a person that has never played it before if should be 7 shades of awesome one liners/story/script.

Iv a funny feeling in short, the story&script will be awesome, probably even better than deus ex 1, as for the gameplay and graphics iv a feeling it will also be awesome, but the storyline will make this game, something missing from todays games.

Well like someone else clarified, they've changed engines ONCE, from the Quake 2 to Unreal engine, which they've supposedly heavily modified (well you'd hope so would'nt you!). Nearly two years ago they claimed to have a lot of the content completed and were just 'polishing' up the gameplay. You'd think in that time they would have at least produced some sort of viable in-game screenshot.....to silence the doubters if nothing else. At the moment they arent even confident enough to do that, so hope for a 2008 release is being slightly optimistic.

A 2018 release is slightly optimistic :)

Is there actually any proof this game is in development?

If they really have been working on it all this time its quite pathetic as they must have wasted a lot of work and money for nothing, a game can't be worked on for 10+ years without that happening, unless of course the game is some bizarre mix of old and new and has hundreds of hours of game play. :p
