'On yer bike' says Boris...

Never heard of the metabolic resting rate before. Apparently I'd need 1843 calories. Sent me down a bit of a wormhole now. Wondering how quickly I'd lose my jiggly bits if i cut out sweets and cookies from my diet.

Remember that this is just calories needed if you were to do nothing, not move at all all day, which is impossible. Every action you do will add some calories onto this. Just most peoples pottering around here and there, up and down the stairs 10/15 times a day, easily adds on hundreds more calories. Then add on exercise should you choose as well and it's suddenly quite easy to cause weight loss with minor caloric reductions.

I think they are going about this the wrong way, unlike smoking you need food to live. People are overweight from eating too much food not from simply eating junk food. It's about a whole life style change, getting people not only thinking carefully about their needs (calories, micro/macro nutrients) but also about what actually goes into their food and encouraging them to cook more.

If people are eating too much shouldn't they be encouraged to cook less, not more?

Tell that to my gut! Though with my eating habits maybe I'd be gargantuan if I didn't do the exercise I do!

I'm a naturally a greedy ******* too. :p I need to make sure I'm on point with my diet or can over eat quite easily.

Yeah overeating is pretty much the norm for me. I know I'm full... but I'll eat a little more for good measure :p

I feel you...41 now and seems harder and harder to shed weight, even with some exercise due to snacking habits.

I just need to cut out the snacks... a lot easier said than done though!

I've always been fairly comfortable with myself but now seeing that I'm overweight, even though I don't feel like it, has got me second guessing myself now! Have I been having a Homer Simpson in the mirror moment!?

I wish I enjoyed cooking, and people say it's so easy blah blah blah, and some of it is - Roast dinners are a piece of pish as you are basically just sticking stuff in the oven and timing it to all be ready at the same time.

But anything that involves cutting and pan cooking seems to take me longer than suggested, and even if I spend ages making a sauce from scratch and following a highly rated recipe it often turns out bland compared to something shop-bought.

Recently I've just started browning some 5% fat mince meat and putting this in with it: https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/fresh-pasta-sauce/sainsburys-tomato---bacon-sauce-350g, rather than make my own.

It doesn't seem too bad on the calorie front. Not sure how nutritional it is without the usual mushrooms and onion but it claims to be one of my five a day.

I was 23st 7, got down to 12st 7, held that for 6 months, then some minor health niggles etc and I've shot up to 16st4

Just going back on the diet (Slimming world for me!) to see if I can get back down to what I consider a healthy weight of under 13st.. I did get people saying I was a bit too think in the face etc, but I felt a lot better than I do now!

The problem is people that know you will be thrown by weight loss of such a magnitude so they are going to see big differences in your face. I imagine that those who don't really know you thought you looked perfectly normal.

You an live fine on one full meal a day and many do, you don't need to wolf down the traditional 3 (plus desert). Only people with a fast metabolism can eat constantly and never put on weight.

Is there a barrier to food companies making food that is both tasty and healthy? Apart from cost obviously but food science is advancing so why they can't you make a ready meal for example that isn't full of junk? Just seems it should be possible and while in an ideal world we would all cook from scratch with fresh ingredients that isn't going to happen so the next best thing would be for companies to make healthier versions of processed foods like sauce jars, frozen food and ready meals.

Is there an actual scientific reason why we can't make unhealthy food healthy? Is it due to preservatives, or are there not natural or man made healthy alternatives to the natural cravings we get for high fat / sugar foods? Could you make a mars bar for example out of a base ingredient that is mainly low calorie and then pump some artificial sweetener and vitamins in to it. What do astronauts eat, they all seem healthy :p

Biscuits are the worst I can't stop eating them I don't buy them for that reason but someone gifted me umpteen unwanted packets and yep waistline is suffering. If I can find a foodbank I'm going to donate 'em.

Money, there is generally a lot of sugar in ready made food because sugar is very cheap.

When you first swap to home cooking its one of the first things you notice, it's why it can taste bland for starters.
People add sugar to everything for no real reason.
Were bringing up our children with as little as possible, only drinks water, breakfast for him is Weetabix few chopped dates and prunes and whole cream milk, that's it.

This sort of stuff is the worst. It's a slippery slope. That sauce itself doesn't look too bad at first glance but there's no need for the preservatives and salt and especially sugar. I mean for **** sake half a pot of that has over 2 teaspoons of sugar in?

Why is it so hard to sweat an onion for 5mins, add a tin of tomatoes and the herbs you want? Ready-made pasta sauces have to be the most pointless things in the world.
