'On yer bike' says Boris...

Tomatoes contain sugar :p
And onion does. You can't go off that list, best looking for added sugar, that's the sugar that's not needed. Natural sugar is obviously unavoidable.
Ok, so I had a quick look and a whole tin of Napolina chopped tomatoes contains about 14g of sugar. Yet this sauce contains 20g. So the difference is 6g. That's still about a teaspoon of (presumably added) sugar. You get my point; sauces like that always have added salt and sugar etc. and it's so damn easy to make a tomato sauce from scratch...

Isn't BMI just a load of ****?

Nope not in general, it's not perfect, it's a crude measure but it is a good guide for the vast majority of people.

There are exceptions though for example it doesn't work well for very short people and very tall people.

There is also the well known OCUK forums phenomenon - it's a well known fact that almost all the posters on here are world class rugby players or dedicated body builders or have big heavy bones etc.. and BMI doesn't count for them - this has been confirmed in just about every thread it gets mentioned in :D

A teaspoon of sugar is only 16 calories though, cooking sauces like that aren't too bad (obviously preservatives is another point entirely). I tend to make my own using tinned tomatoes or passata but mainly because the versatility of making more things from scratch.

Sure, on its own 1tsp isn't bad but you've seen yourself from the poster above that it leads to what is essentially a sugar addiction. Food doesn't taste right without it etc.

Bit rich of Boris to say we're all too fat :p

He should look in the mirror every once in a while :p
He's actually admitted he is as well, that's what started all this. The realisation that him being overweight could have been a factor in how poorly he got, and if he had been fatter might not have even made it.

Perhaps Boris can tell me to find a decent bike. I spent a while researching and narrowing down my list of mountain bikes, I've been trying to buy one now for the past 5 or 6 months but nowhere has any stock, well not unless you're talking about spending £3k or so - which I am not.

You have one of the best bike shops on your doorstep run by ex professionals and fanatics - Swinnertons.
Go get their advice and then buy cheaper :)

Have been up there a few times, along with the CDC at Westport Lake and Brian Rourkes in Cobridge and the advice from all three places is to hold off and wait for the 2021 bikes as none currently have any stock.

Money, there is generally a lot of sugar in ready made food because sugar is very cheap.

When you first swap to home cooking its one of the first things you notice, it's why it can taste bland for starters.
People add sugar to everything for no real reason.
Were bringing up our children with as little as possible, only drinks water, breakfast for him is Weetabix few chopped dates and prunes and whole cream milk, that's it.

Probably right, I bet it could be done though if money wasn't a factor. Tasty, healthy and convenient food that doesn't go out of date in a few days time would be a market winner if that market wasn't already dominated by big players that see any change as a threat.

I haven't looked in a while but I remember reading about fibre based sugar alternatives that were in development when the sugar tax first came in, it just seems to be a win for everyone if we can find healthier alternatives to go in all processed foods. Even for the healthy people moaning about fat people as their occasional treats wouldn't be as unhealthy and even a slightly healthier nation is more productive.

But then I'm one of those people that would happily take a pill a day that had all I needed and got rid of hunger. Cooking does nothing for me and will only really bother if I'm cooking for other people. I know you can cook in batches and freeze it but then you either eat the same thing each day or buy a big freezer. 3D printed protein goo with added flavours is the future! :p

Fair play on your kid, guess you can't stop what they eat out of your home but they'll probably find treats overly sweet if they aren't used to them.

It tackles the symptom but not the cause. We need to stop being a nation of lazy, overeating slobs.

Exercise has little to do with weight loss.

It's 90% diet.

All the nation would need to do is force overweight people to eat porridge in the morning, no refined sugars can be added. It keeps you full forever and has very little calories.

Then ban processed and refined foods at supermarkets.

Force people to cook using stuff that comes out the ground or on trees and plants, etc. Ready made food has caused this. Go back to selling only fresh foods. No pizzas, ready made pies, etc.

Just as long as we also ban smoking, drinking and force everyone to do a minimum of 4 hours of exercise a week as well - I mean thats just as fair now isn't it!

I know that this blame-game is cyclic and it's come back to "blame the fatties" turn on this weeks "who do we hate" wheel but, alternatively, instead of living in a dystopian Hell where we have to "force" people like we're some kind of WW2 Gestapo, how about we look into ALL the reasons people can be unhealthy which includes weight, smoking, drinking and lack of exercise amongst others and come up with a plan to help people with ALL those aspects, rather than singling out a single one as this weeks "hate crime". Or do people just want a new target to hate this week instead?

Hasn't this all come about because Johnson nearly died, and being overweight is a contributory factor with the virus? He didn't give a carp about being fat before he got ill. So I'm not sure it's just 'this weeks hate' obesity is a big problem in this country and it does need some thought to sort it out.
Most people still won't change their lifestyles though.

We’ve been in a very good place in terms of meals for the last few weeks and the chub is starting to come off. Working from home has been great for that, more time to plan and cook proper meals instead of reaching for what can be chucked in the oven for 20 mins.

If your struggling to cook tasty food that isn’t loaded with calories, I’d suggest the last 3 books by Tom kerridge. Most of the recipes are fairly interesting, inexpensive and not full of obscure ingredients you just need for one dish. His recipes are far tastier than you can get from a jar and pretty easy to make.

It'll have been forgotten about in a few months as the next target for the "hate mob" of online Karens spins around on the Wheel of Hate (schools will be opening by then so thats the next target I would guess).

What's sad is that obesity really is a problem, but it's a "personal" one, so while I understand the Governments message, nothing positive will actually happen for the vast majority of fat people and most will just end up feeling targetted by hate mobs (as shown by the amount of "punish them" vitriol in this thread) which does nothing but make the Karens feel good.
