'On yer bike' says Boris...

I'm 5ft 10, and I can have a heavy meal and I will approaching 25 on the BMI scale.

I'm not remotely fat (I'm not ripped either!), as I compete in triathlons etc.

So yeh, BMI for individuals can be very misleading.

I think it needs a altering. People are bigger and taller now.

My son's school calculated my son's bmi and then we started getting letters off the NHS about it.

He's just a big lad for his age and a very small pop belly. Not fat at all.

These figures are rubbish tho. If your tall, well built or muscly on the bmi scale you can be overweight or obese. So in reality them figures are much lower.
I thought BMI accounts for height.
Most of the population are not well built or muscly. As a snapshot of the population it is a good indicator of health

BMI takes height in to consideration. Also shock as parents don't see anything wrong in their child.

BMI doesnt really work for people with a lot of muscle, like a weight lifter. But other than that if it says you're a porker, you probably are.

How much do you weigh? I'm 5'9 and weigh 10st/65kg. I've been called skinny many times in my life but the reality is I'm slap bang in the middle of healthy BMI. Just goes to show how people's perceptions have changed over time and how much obesity is normalised nowadays.

I will agree though, if you're a weight lifter or something then it's not going to be very reflective of your actual weight.

Absolutely, I call it 'the fat filter'

Which isn't surprising since the 'norm' is being overweight in this country then people who are actually in the normal weight range are perceived as 'skinny'.

I'm not fat I'm just big boned.
No you're fat. A pot belly isn't normal.

That's how my neighbours child started, now he doesn't even look like he has a neck.

Lol apparently I am overweight :p BMI of 27.4
5'11'' and after weighing myself 3 times I'm just under 14 stone. Jean size is usually a 32"

Not sure I entirely agree with it but oh well. I definitely have a small amount of belly fat but don't carry any fat anywhere else and I lead a very active lifestyle. Most evenings throughout lockdown if I haven't done a 15 or 25 mile cycle I end up going on a ~7 mile walk. Did an almost 40 mile cycle on Sunday and having just taken up running I can do 5Km in 30 minutes so I don't feel I'm particularly unfit. If anything they suggest I should weigh 9 stone through to 12 stone. 9 just sounds unrealistic and I can't see myself carrying almost 2 stone of weight on my stomach.

In all seriousness, you clearly do enough exercise so it must be down to your diet.

It's simply down to calories in versus calories out. If you're doing a lot of exercise and burning calories then you must be taking in too many calories to lose any weight.

I guess the question is, the lockdown is quite a recent thing. What did you do before that and have you lost weight since starting it? How many calories do you consume? It would need to be quite a lot to not lose weight if you're that active?

Oh my diet is far from ideal - in my mind i do a lot of 'exercise' so I tend to eat whatever I want. I am a bit of a salad dodger but the other half, who is also very active, does smuggle it onto my plate.

I've always been relatively active, i now cycle a lot more than I used to but at various parts of my life I've either been a casual gym goer or I do, or rather did when centres were open, play Badminton 2-3 times a week and during those hours I could easily burn 4-500 calories. I don't really weigh myself (as I've never seen myself as fat) but I've been around 14 stone for the last 4/5 years I'd say. back when I was 20/21 I was about 10/11 stone but I looked borderline malnourished

You know nothing about respect either.... How about post a picture up hey?

Lol get a grip, I owe you no respect. Your kid's fat, do something about it and he'll live a longer, healthier, happier life.
And whilst I might not know anything about him, the teachers and medical professionals that have contacted you do. Pull your head out of the clouds and listen to them.

One of my more recent photos... behold the 27.4 fatness! I do need to change my diet though. The bloody munchies will be the death of me! Dread to know what I'd be like if I drank fizzy drinks!

He's very broad and muscly. That makes him over weight and going to die young?

Your the one who needs to get a grip

So no fat on his arms and legs or face and a little be on his belly is abnormal?

Not trying to have a pop/pile on, just perhaps stir more discussion and thought, but is this perhaps the issue we're talking about? We're so used to something, we accept it as the norm? Honestly, no it's probably not normal to have a pot belly as a kid, but then what is normal? Maybe it is normal and the question should be 'is it right'?

behold the 27.4 fatness!

I don't mind posting a pic of my 'overweight' BMI of 25+ but tbh, I don't think anyone's arguing it doesn't work for everyone. I think I am relatively muscular and it simply doesn't work for me.
