I've only ever watched a couple of episodes from the first series, which were like dodgy copies of the UK original. I've heard it improves a huge amount after that as it goes in its own direction.
Hit the nail on the head. Season 1 is only 6 episodes and largely copies the UK series, with limited success. By episode 6 of season 2, it find's it's own stride and you fall in love with the characters for themselves, rather than clones of the UK series.
