OnePlus One.

Does anyone else think this is just vaporware at the moment? They have eeked out maximum publicity on having about 400 handsets available for launch (which keeps getting pushed back).

There is no word on general availability nor how many handsets they will have in the first batch.

It strikes me that the company does not want to take a risk on stock levels and will be selling 500 handsets every month or so. Of course this is all speculation but the BS that has come out of the company thus far is startling and the "invite only because that way our true fans gets handsets" is plainly illogical compared to a general release.

Was thinking similar.

My cynicism wonders if the invite system was brought in because they knew some of the negative things about the device would gain more traction if on open sale. Doing it though invites keeps the supply closer to the enthusiasts that really want one and less likely not to really know what it is their buying. Secondly obviously because of the lack of supply.

I also wondered if the only invites going out are to those that smash their phone. Do we have to wait for them to receive those for them to get their 3 invites each or do they receive their invites by email? I mention this because part of their hype engine showed Pete writing out small cards, were these the invitations? Either way those 300 invites need to be used to make a purchase, we don't know if all of them will be. Assuming they are all used, that then generates another 900 invites but it's going to take a while with the delays in between recipients receiving invite and placing order and for the invites to ramp up. I don't really see how the invite system helps them gauge demand either as someone could give their invites to who ever via forums who could live anywhere.

I think they are just stalling for time as they take their turn in OPPO's manufacturing priorities, once underway I can't see them doing anything other than running that production line like the clappers, morning, noon and night, otherwise the cost to produce the handset will sough (subject to whatever agreement they have with OPPO) and they'll start loosing on each unit once shipping is also factored in, including shipping to customer.

I entered the competition. not too fussed about smashing my s4. as i'll have the new phone for $1 anyways. :)

if you win, apparently over 100,000 have completed the smash application, only 100 will be picked, don't smash anything before you've been picked.

Was going to jump into another contract for the Z2, but I like my 3 sim only contract and I've always gone for bargain buys anyway.

Roll on release.

Im on a sim only with 3 too and was looking at a new phone as Im bored of my S3, and while this looks great for the price, it looks like it's gonna be a LONG time till we can actually get it...so might just buy a M8 instead hmmm...

I see the parent company of Oppo\Opo is also releasing a phone this month called the Vivo XShot.

I don't really get the hype. So it is going to be nearly £300 for the 64gb version but won't be widely available until June....and by June we might start seeing phones with the snapdragon 805 and quad hd screens being released or at least announced. So it will already be obsolete or nearly obsolete meaning the price point isn't going to be looking that wonderful once it is widely available.

This gets a big old meh from me. I don't like how they are marketing it either. Just comes across as smug and desperate.

because those 64GB qHD Snapdragon 805 phones that MIGHT be announced in June will be under 300...NOT.

but yeah...cut the invite and hype BS, make the phone publicly available to buy for anyone or gtfo.

that said, even if I didn't buy the phone, I quite like that it will create pressure on existing makers to drop their prices, I'm looking at you Nexus 6.

It won't. My point was that this will then more be more in line with the prices you might expect for the spec and an unknown manufacturer. The new phones with better specs will take the top price point of £500-£550.

Don't get me wrong, it will still be fairly cheap, but not the OMG FLAGSHIP KILLER kind of way.

If this released at the start of April it would have been a better proposition.

I would also rather have 32gb in built and the ability to add a 64/128gb sd card as well

Do we even know when it will be available to buy in this country?

The price is more appealing in the US although so is the Nexus.

I also noticed yesterday some people pointing out that the OPO was also missing LTE band 12 which affects US customers with T-Mobile which have just purchased some band 12, 700 Mhz spectrum from Verizon.

I think they've got a small window of opportunity to shift some volume if only they were available to buy. By the time it's on general sale I don't think we'll be far off seeing the Nexus 6. Part of me is thinking the slightly lesser specs on the N5 is still worth paying a little extra for, 16GB £299 vs £229 for the OPO.

If the N6 is similarly priced then there's also something to be said for being first in line for the latest releases of Android and a pure experience. Hope it has micro sd and removable battery though.
