OnePlus One.

It will be interesting to read the first reviews of CM12S for this phone, which hopefully won't contain too many bugs.

I suspect more than a few owners are holding off in the Oxygen 'update' just now, until they have a better idea of the alternative... which will have the additional benefit (for some anyway!) of being available as a direct OTA download.

Is this still a worthwhile phone to get? I'm torn between buying this outright and getting a SIM only deal, or grabbing an htc m9... any suggestions? Pros and cons etc....

The difference is sorta the same as buying a sporty Volkswagen vs. buying a BMW M5. They might broadly both do the same thing, they just do it in different ways for different prices.

The OPO is great if you want power and storage and a relatively decent dev community. But it doesn't touch the M9 for design or speakers. Depends whether you think the extra is worth it.

I think the VW vs BMW is a bit unfair. Maybe on design, yes. But features wise surely they are very, very similar?

Sidenote; I don't know why people bang on about HTC speakers. I can count on one hand the amount of times over 5+ yrs I've used external speakers on a phone. I leave that for the chavs at the back of the bus.

For me, I'd never go back to contract. SIM free is great. So I'd just buy what I can afford, what I like the best and what is best bang for buck. I bought my OPO 3 weeks ago and didn't consider anything else.

Anyone flashed Oxygen OS yet? I have.

I like it so far (early days). I've always liked Nexus devices and this is the speed and simplicity of a Nexus with just a few added features. The device is very smooth with this ROM so far. Time will tell as always. I tried CM12 but found it a tad glitchy, Facebook stopped working randomly (worked on OHs M8) even after a restart, clear data and even re-install - everything else worked. Lagged a bit at times (noticeable especially next to OOS). I will stick with this for a few days, so far so good.

I use external speakers quite often, especially now that nicer weather is coming around. Makes listening to music easy when you're sitting outside with a group. That being said, I have found the OPO speakers to be good so far, louder than the HTC One and with not a hugely noticeable drop in quality.

I still think it's about the design and refinement that you get with the One. It's not gonna be worth it for everyone but some people will put it higher than others in terms of importance. There's no denying though that the OPO is fantastic value for money.

As for the speakers debate, personally with a One I enjoy watching videos on my phone. With the OPO I don't as much because the sound is tinny and weak in comparison.

I managed to get Oxygen installed, but the buglist on Reddit put me off a bit and then I realised the lock screen wallpaper was stuck, so I went back to CM12 nightlies. Here's hoping 12S is out soon...

The speakers on the OnePlus are above-average I would say. They are a bit thin but I wouldn't say tinny. There's a little bit of bass too.

However, the way they're positioned is idiotic. The phone has huge top and bottom bezels which you could easily fit stereo speakers in.

By the way, despite there being two speakers, the sound is actually mono, not stereo.

The bezels are not huge (certainly much smaller than the HTC One), and the bottom one has capacitive buttons which is something that attracted me to the device as I'm not keen on having the buttons on screen.

I use loudspeakers on phones a lot for conference calls, and the OnePlus speakers seem excellent for that. I don't need or want inbuilt stereo speakers for music given the physical compromises that have to be made.

Speakers do it fine for me, majority of the times I'm using 'phones and the rare occasion I play out loud no one seems to care about quality all that much

Starting to notice a lack of responsiveness on the bottom section of the screen, including the capacitive buttons... seemed to come on after leaving it on a table in the sun for 30 minutes yesterday lunch time.

EDIT: Rebooted which seems to have helped.

this really. personally i care more about the sound that comes through the earphones/line out than the speakers.

I guess for me it makes the difference between watching something on my M8, and enjoying the great screen and sound, or watching it on my OPO and chromecasting it to the telly instead. Not saying that the speakers are for everyone, but the M8's are undeniably better and it's a decent value-add for me.
