Onkyo 876 upgrade ?

Woke up this morning and my 876 wont power on on....

The front Led is flashing...when I power on it comes on fir a few seconds then goes off...

I have read the manual and disconnected everything..I'm now waiting an hour until powering it on again....

Fingers crossed it comes back on....:(

Yeah the 876 won't turn back on...it comes on for a few seconds and then goes off...:(

Any ideas what the Denon AVR x4400 is like ?
I'm well out of touch with latest amps m8,I've got a £1300 amp from 15 years ago and that's a Denon and still amazes me with the sound.

That is one option though older av pre-amp that were thousands are now hundreds, pair that with a budget power amp and you'll performance greater than your onkyo. You don't need the latest features so it may be one possible option.

Flashing led is protect mode. Could be a number of reasons but if you've pulled all your cables and it's still doing it then I would assume something inside has popped. See if you can get it repaired would be my first port of call.

Amplification has gone backwards and prices have gone up. to buy an av amp with better amplification than the 876 is going to cost you at least a grand plus and probably more. However, the sheer amount of features they are packing in these days might well make up for that. Guess it depends if you really need that sort of sonic ability - I find I dont, never have time for it these days.

Maybe see if you can arrange some home demos ofnkit at various price points?

Yup older avr had more robust power supplies real power output that's why say that power amps with be similar to power of his broke amp because new budget amps won't be.

Could you get it repaired ?

I guess so but depending on whats wrong with it it might not be worth it.

I'm taking into a shop on Monday and they are charging me £48 to take a look and let me know what what what....They then take this sum of 48 off the repair cost.

Unless there's a fairly major short across one of the speaker terminals then this sounds like an issue with the power getting to the relay that switches on the main power transformer. Could be a dead transistor or a degraded circuit board track. Either way, it's very unlikely to fix itself. Electrical faults rarely do.

If you're handy with a soldering iron and don't mind the work involved, then doing a DIY repair is possible. If the amp really is dead then you've little to lose at this stage. Be warned though, this isn't for the faint hearted.

Changing for a new/newer amp is the other option. Whilst newer amps have gained a lot of features since your 876 was launched, and those features have filtered down to lower priced models too, what hasn't changed is the cost of power.

I feel its my duty to at least try and give the 876 another chance..Its been my hub of my cinema since it was built and its never missed a beat.

Wow its nearly been a decade in December when I started building it!

48 quid to have her checked out is a must!

Don't throw money into a item for repair if it's beginning to show its age it won't have any resell value, aves go out of date and if you need new functions little point getting it fixed as could put repair fees into higher end avr. Decide if it's worth repairing or not. Even if amp stages are good and I believe older onkyos were good amp stages

But if the amp ticks all his boxes and does what he wants they it would be silly to get rid of and spend £800 on a new amp when he knows his old one is better.

My Denon AVC-A10SE does everything I want,powerfully,DTS,7.1,I'm the 2nd owner and my friend purchased it brand new with the speakers (which I have also) and has never had the volume past a quarter (he dosent like loud music) so I know 100% the amp is perfect,if it broke down I would get it repaired as I love the sound it produces as I think the older amps give a better sound than the new ones.
