Online coffee beans retailer

Sometimes I wish I never changed jobs. My old office was about 10 minutes from Wogan's roastery in Bristol. Got to know the staff well enough they'd often save special beans for me if they were running low or often I'd just ask for a weight and they'd give me a random set of beans.

Since then the last 18 months I've been drinking just store bought beans and I really miss having the sweetshop experince of Wogan!

That eBay shop looks like a decent shout though so I may give them a go. Then again if I am ordering online I may as well see if Wogan's still sell the Mio's Brazilian Microlot bean

Picked up a bag of Lofbergs Brazil Single Origin and very impressed for the price. Anyone else tried it, how do you find it compares?
I'm by no means an expert on coffee but its one of the better ones available from a supermarket. Took me awhile to find the right grind setting for it on my DeLonghi but it makes a decent cuppa once dialled in correctly. For not much more though you can get freshly roasted direct from a roaster. You've no idea when it was roasted when buying from supermarket and usually just has a use by date.

What would you recommend for a strength 4/5 roast from elsewhere? I'm keen to explore more but don't know where to start - this thread is full of ideas but I see a lot of expensive stuff.

Have to recommend Horsham Coffee Roasters and also Hasbean (now ozone!?). Used both on and off for many years and never been disappointed with their coffee or service. Definitely had a few that weren't to my taste, I've had a real thing for Rwandan coffee and Horsham used to frequently send out a few.

I'm not so sure these days but Hasbean were very active on socials with their trips out to farms and some of the work they were doing.

Ozone is nowhere as good as Hasbean was. It really does seem like quality has dropped since Steve left. :( Just can't recommend them anymore.

Currently getting most of my coffee from Square Mile, Origin, Strangers and Kofra.

Craft house coffee (love the industrial blend) and blackcat coffee (pineapple candy special) are my usual go tos.

This has been my go to for years, can anyone recommend something similar/better from any independant stores?

Thanks

You won’t go far wrong with a generic house blend from anyone mentioned in here. They’re typically not the most exciting or exotic but a good way to dabble.
But also a really good idea to give a single origin a try too! You could find a (more) distinctive flavour that you really enjoy. I think a lot of people tend to be put off buying from independent or specialty roasters by price but that's less and less of an issue these days. Availability on the high street though, still remains an issue.

Agreed 100%. Getting inconsistently roasted beans, dark to the point of burnt beans and then cruddy customer service ("No, they're not dark" was the reply. Why are there oils showing then) really put me off using them again. A shame really, I was a huge fan of theirs.

Oh, and I *HATED* the way they stuck their fingers in their ears and said "lalalalalala" loudly when something happened with their customer database and people started getting spam from a fake Hasbean, example here. The email address I was getting this crap to was [email protected] which was only ever used for Hasbean. It must have come from their systems somehow. Anyway, they did eventually admit something was wrong but the continual denial was poor.

Found my order number for my current In My Mug scription (that I'm cancelling) it starts HB2009. That's been continuous ever since. Before that he did them as 3, 6 or 12 month subscriptions only. I think I've only missed a couple of them in all those years. Also found all the original in my mug videos too. Ooooh boy that first one is ropey!

It's odd, but I really miss seeing Steve in person and doing videos online. I loved winding him up from time to time. ;) Sent him a Mug from Monaco when I went there. Included some pieces of F1 tyre marbles in the cup. Told him not to taste them. :D I know he's got married again and is running a cafe/roastery in Sweden called Drop Coffee. Have had some of their stuff before. As expected, it was excellent. Expensive to get over here, but maybe worth it for a treat.

I agree with the beans. They even list the beans on the site as dark roast and so on, and then when I've questioned it, said 'they're more medium than dark'. Well they taste darkly roasted to me. Also had difficulty getting consistant brews from them most of the while. Some days a V60 will end at 2 minutes, then not changing anything, next day it'll be over 4 minutes.

I do remember the spam. Got a few bits. Reported it to them, got no response at all.

Genuinely glad I mentioned Hasbean now, I was considering restarting a subscription but after reading the above i'll think twice.

I take no pleasure in saying that I can't recommend them. Even if darker roasts are your thing, their coffee still isn't great as the roast is quite inconsistent no. Couple that with cruddy customer service and it's a company best avoided.

Previously the customer service was superb but it really wasn't the last few times I tried to use it. It didn't go down hill immediately Steve left from what I remember but it didn't take too long.

I like Hormozi’s coffee, but OMG their website is so infuriating to use. It’s hella slow, and often throws “this combination is not possible” errors.

Time to go back to Wogan :(

I use Origin atm simply because I have so many points to use that I get £5 off my subscription every week so it's only costing me £4 a bag.

I'll be switching to someone else when they run out though as I'm not a big fan of their beans after trying a few.

Yea I know, such a shame because their coffee is good, prices are good, no issues with their service, I have been using them for ages, easily 5+ years, but yes their website is crap.

On this atm, birthday treat (spendy!)

I still keep coming back to 47 Degrees Coffee for my everyday, on the Guatamalan Santa Rosa at the moment, although the Colombian and America Diner blend are very nice too.

When I want something lighter or more fuity, I go to Chipp Coffee and see what specials they have in. They have a relatively small selection but rotate frequently, and the coffees are always great, more spend than 47 degrees (£35/kg rather than £24).

We've ordered (mostly) green beans, but some roasted beand from Redber, and the price and quality has been good so far, particurly the green bean "bundle" prices.
