OnLive now FREE and WORKS in the UK!

Just got this in my inbox:

INTRODUCING THE ONLIVE APP!
Now you can experience console-quality gaming on your Android tablet and smartphone. Launch a top-tier game anywhere. Play it everywhere.
Experience top-tier games on your tablet: No more flinging birds.
Pick up your games anywhere: Play over WiFi or your mobile network.
Play via touch or controller: Play select games via touch, or play them all with the Universal OnLive Wireless Controller. Learn More

Sounds pretty cool! The fact the latest Android OS can make use of the wireless controller via its optional USB dongle is pretty dam slick.

That's a portable console that you can play anywhere if you've a decent internet connection! That's a pretty big IF though :)

Bluetooth? O.o

:p

I'm aware of how current technologies could technically be used to make connections between devices it's more a comment on the locked down nature of Apple devices and software.

Since the release of the "Epic Citadel" demo on the iPad I've long looked for a way to use a bluetooth controller as a controller in legitimate apps. To me the graphic fidelity possible with the iPad combined with PS3 controller made it look like a very attractive portable console.

I know it's been possible with Jailbroken apps, such as emulators, and I know Android tablets now has "usb controllers" as a massive selling point. First of all it seems strange to me that Apple are allowing a FREE app that allows people to play games and on top of that it's the ONLY app I know of that has controller support.

Dumbed down gameplay?

Of course. Not a result of Onlive, but lets face it, Onlive is basically console games in cyberspace but with even more rubbish graphics.

And people say this is the future?

I can't believe how many people endorse this and would use it as their primary gaming platform. All because of what, convenience?

Got a micro-console, pretty sweet tbh - no downloading, no waiting, fast loading - can't complain!

Just been playing Lego Batman on SGSII, awesome - instant load and great graphics!

Will try it on Galaxy Tab tomorrow.

This will only really take off when significant amounts of people have lighting fast internet connections, and when they do, I will be hard pressed to think of a reason why anybody would not want to use OnLive (other than prejudice and bias, obviously ;)).

I think it works best as the monthly rental option. For roughly the cost of two brand new games per year you can play the old ones as long as you like for a year. And more games get added all the time. :D

So, just tried this on my new FTTC 40mb connection and its (obviously) a whole different experience to when i tried it on my 3.5Mb connection 6mths or so ago.

Tried the Aliens Vs Predator trial, and being able to run at 720p and ultra low latency almost makes you think your playing on an installed game.

Almost...once out of the darker areas, the video compression was a lot more noticeable.

But that's really my only complaint...so yes its a viable alternative to those with cheap crappy laptops, business PC's with little or no GPU capability, plus a modern fibre optic connection.

Played the 30 minute trial of Arkham City the other night, awesome service, just not for gaming on a decent PC with a 24" screen. The compression looks awful on blacks and dark colours IMO but on my XPS M1330 13" it is a nice change to be able to play new games.

I stand by my view that this tech is the future of gaming full stop, just maybe a few years off being mature enough

BT Doubt Over Uncertain Future for UK OnLive Broadband Video Game Service

Unfortunately OnLive USA ran into serious financial problems last week and narrowly avoided bankruptcy by spinning (selling) itself off to venture capitalist group Lauder Partners LLC and effectively becoming a new company. As it stands now the OnLive service will continue to operate with the same name, albeit with half the staff it had before.

Who else saw it coming? :p
