OnLive now FREE and WORKS in the UK!

Quick update guys - although the subscription fees have been scrapped (you no longer have to pay monthly) the games you buy you only get to keep for a few years.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/full-list-of-onlive-pricing-options

"The initial range of pricing options includes rentals that last three or five days and an unlimited pass that provides access until at least 17th June 2013 - presumably the length of the current licensing agreements."

Suppose it's just a matter of opinion if that pricing strategy works out for you...

They did say that you need to be within 1000 miles of a data centre for it to work properly and I doubt anyone in this thread is that close :p

I'll check it out but I'm not going to judge it properly until they get UK/German data centres up and running.

Wow, just got it to work and it's a lot better than expected. It stutters a fair bit and the IQ is not great (like a 720p youtube vid really) but it's just about playable. I just played 30 mins of mafia II, seems quite good.

Not bad for a gaming sesh on ANY machine though. With a better connection and image quality (which most likely go hand in hand), it'll be great.

Are you able to watch other people playing without paying?

Yup, signing up and installing the client for free allows you to do everything the service has to offer.

You only pay money when you select a game and say "I want to rent this for a day" or "I want to buy the full thing"

For free you can watch other people and play the 30 minute demos of all the games available.

FYI the 30 minute timer is how long you actually get playing the game. So if you play for 10 minutes then come back and hour later you will still have 20 minutes to play.

Whatever did happen to the cloud computing of the 90s anyway? When I was working in IT during that time, Citrix and Microsoft Terminal Server were all the rage. Why did it all fall by the wayside? At that time, I thought by now all the corporate environments would be running thin clients.

They're still very much the rage, but it's not exactly cloud computing - the sessions are being piped to dumb terminals, but they're still running from servers on your local network. We have upwards of 500 citrix sessions spread around the country on a farm of about 25 servers in our head office.

Believe me, it beats the hell out of buying / supporting 500 pcs, especially when it comes to rolling out new software and not having to deal with people putting rubbish on their PCs.

Any network admin still running PCs where the desktop is fairly standard needs his ass firing ;)

Anyone manage to get past the "high latency Issue". Sky is pretty poor for latency but I fancied having a look if there is a work around :D

I've got a 20mb connection but I know that means squat with OnLive :p

Still is for US only as far as I can see from their FAQ:

Currently, the OnLive Game Service is only available to users within the contiguous United States.

Unless they haven't updated their FAQ I think we are being let in by accident :)

Had couple of goes, first attempt was quite spectacular for a netbook! Don't think my BT Business hub is up for all this streaming though, it locked solid twice. Hope I can get on from home

I was fairly impressed with the quick go I just had. Playing over WiFi on a 20mb Virgin connection. Parts of the couple of games I tried got twitchy (UT3 / ***) but it worked reasonably well for the most part.
