Oscar Pistorius thread

I'm not seeing many people say they do believe him on here?
Or is just that you are taking people speculating on evidence to mean so?

I personally don't really know what to think.

In some ways his story can be seen to be very credible and I don't really see why he would want to kill his girlfriend and throw away everything. But at the sametime, it can appear quite nonsensical.

On the other, some of what the prosecution raise is very credible, but then also a lot of it seems very weak.

so who here if they heard a burglar would go looking for them in the pitch black dark without first making sure their loved ones where ok ? not me

I'm going back at least 25 years before the birth of my daughters but I was woken up in the middle of night to noises downstairs and I was 100% positive my wife was next to me. I spoke to her and told her to pick the phone up ready to call the Police. I used to keep a 3 foot 'fighting stick' by my bed so I could stand & bang and I picked it up and started to slowly go down the stairs. I then saw a shape over the stair case below me and I got ready to strike. At that moment the burglar turned the stairs light on and it was my wife.

The funny thing is now I could be getting robbed of everything and I take no notice because I just think it's the kids downstairs.

A LAPD detective has basically said the evidence is overwhelming.
The cricket bat with the blood stain and head injury cannot be explained away.

The evidence says an angry man taking testosterone enhancer with a provable history of violence fought with the victim, hit her with a cricket bat, she hid in the bathroom and he then shot her 3 times.

If the evidence states this why did the detective say yesterday he has NO evidence to refute Oscar's version of events?

This LAPD detective was clearly commenting without having followed the story, which makes his own observation skills look pretty weak.

Reeva had no injuries other than the gunshots.
The cricket bat was used to break down the door, it wasn't used as a weapon.

Cricket bat to break down a door? Anyone else find that unlikely given hes just shot his girlfriend, apparemtly only just realises, goes back for a chunk of wood with which to break down the door?

But its also not inconceivable that you would need a cricket bat to break down a locked door. That's why its so tit for tat so far with the Defence and Prosecution and its only going to be worse in the trial proper.

A lot of you must be pretty naive as to what goes on in South Africa on an hourly basis, young children for example(2 year olds, 7 year olds etc) brutally raped, mutilated and murdered every day. Do you think about them?

Life is very cheap over there.

a. What has that got to do with anything?
b. That's pretty common across many countries, India and Syria recent news stories for example.
c. What has that got to do with anything?

I don't doubt that it happens.
Infact, I saw one South African journalist interviewed on Channel 4 News say that in the same week, a woman was beheaded, but it barely got any press at all.

The public appeal of this particular case though doesn't really need to be explained does it?

And why not?

And why not?

Really...?
Well ok.

He is one of South Africa's current most successful athletes, also being the first person ever to take part in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

His relationship with Reeva was subject to gossip press interest, much like any high profile couple over here is.

Unlike a random who might have killed his girlfriend or wife, he is somebody that people feel they know, because of how much of his life we know about.

There is also the interest that people want to know whether he did, if he did then why. It's also hard to get your head around how he has thrown it all way.

It's hilarious some people here believe him.
Why, because some people can keep an open mind?

By their own admission, the police haven't been able to offer any evidence that disagrees with Pistorius' version of events.

People don't always behave in logical ways from an external point of view, people do stupid things all the time, and when it involves firearms the consequences can be the much more serious.

I really didn't want to chime in on this thread for multiple reasons but this is a point that all through the thread has been ringing in my head. So many people think they know what they would do in a certain situation but you never know until you are actually in that situation. Even more so anyone who hasn't actually lived for any extended period of time in South Africa has no idea the mindset or mentality of living in a fairly savage country.

the "logical" of a British person growing up here and the "logical" of a South African growing up in a dangerous country are worlds apart.

.

I don't think this is right (first oly and para)

Also, as I said earlier, relating to your other points, he's fallen far, not some druggy who had an awful childhood to expect of killing someone. It's more shocking.

Edit: whilst some have competed in para and then Olympic. There were others in Beijing who did compete in both (one is also SA);
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natalia_Partyka - polish table tennis player
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natalie_du_Toit - SA swimmer, first amputee to ever qualify for he Olympic Games.

So that makes his life more worthy. You come across as a media filled sheep, so I wont go any further.

Why are you making things up?
Where did I say that his life is more worthy?

I simply pointed out to you the reason why this case has drawn so much attention after you asked, though I thought it was quite obvious why without having to tell you.

Media filled sheep?
If living in the world and following the news makes me a media filled sheep, then I suppose that makes me and the majority of others as you say.

At the end of the day, how am I going to follow other cases and stories if they aren't reported?
