Over 1000 dead and rising as 50'c+ Heatwave hits Hajj in Saudi Arabia

I feel compassion for those who try to cross the channel hoping for a better life for their families because Britain has systems in place to help people in need, and they risk everything to make it here. We are a better country from where they came.

This lot are just religious sheep incapable of thinking for themselves or making a rational decision and I have no sympathy for them.

I guess you have to give some sympathy.
Like a kid with mental health issues. They can't themselves a lot of the time.

Many of these people are religiously indoctrinated and have very little apart from it.

So although I agree, if you're intelligent, with it, have a good life etc.. It's insane. Many probably have little else and little chance to break away from this way of life.

Strangely lacking any empathy here... the fact is they have made numerous conscious choices to put themselves through that and it's hardly like it's going to be more hospitable over time so maybe (a very optimistic ask) they might start thinking about reducing the dogma.

I bet its pretty amazing to be part of. Almost makes me wish I had faith of some kind. I wish people would take sensible precautions though it seems entirely preventable.

Oh it would be amazing to actually truely believe in a religion, afterlife etc etc.

Just being able to write life **** off at "it'll be ok in the end" must be so liberating

I know Muslims are supposed to do Hajj at least once in their life time.

But is there a set time of the year they have to go?

It's like Ramadan in as much as it's occurs
at a fixed period in the Islamic calendar

But as that calendar doesn't align with the calendar we otherwise use the date 'wanders' throughout the year.

I have a colleague who did this a few years ago and said it was the best thing she ever did but it was physically very challenging. Though she said when she did it that it was organised really well and they had plenty of water supplied to them.

Horrible for this to happen though. For followers of the faith this is a really big deal and significant to them and something they try to do at least once in their lives. No doubt some of the people who passed have been working up to this trip for a number of years and for this to happen is quite sad.

The trouble with that mindset is that you just give up on the the one life you KNOW you have, and may as well just commit suicide to get there quicker.

Faith - the belief in something without evidence.

No thanks - religion is one of the dumbest things humans have ever invented, and this situation just proves it.

Apparently there are aircon units in stations for the official route the trouble is there are a lot of unregistered or unofficial uh pilgrims and they're the ones in trouble

By that line of thinking you may as well give up on life anyway if there's nothing after.

The average person plan and book this months or years in advance due to costs and is seen as the ultimate act of the Muslim religion. Tbh I wouldn’t mind going to see this and I’m not religious.

I thought the same and asked the locals about a visit to Mecca myself but you weren't allowed to visit as someone who is a non-Muslim, even outside of Hajj. When you get to the outskirts of Mecca the traffic lanes actually divide with a clear (Muslim/Non-Muslim) road sign with only the Muslim lanes being allowed into the area and the Non-Muslim road going around the outside.

However you could go to Medina and visit the Mosques there, they look stunning.

would a bit of compassion for the deceased be too much to hope for around here?

Apparently compassion is in short supply, and I'm genuinely quite surprised by that.

Nope, by my line of reasoning you should live the best life that you can for as long as you can because it’s the only one you know you have. If there ends up being something else afterwards, then even better - you get to live two lives.

It would make a mockery of this life and whatever is behind it would have a lot of questions to answer…

How much does the government charge?

Quick Google suggests close to £4k, but it's difficult to find actual information.
My cousin and his wife went to Hajj this year. It cost them £12k each. And that was not for premium service.

That's a lot of money and there are many who will not be able to go.
It's all run by the Saudi government now.
